They tend to follow what they hear from other individuals and what they believe to be a good reputable facility. My family is the same in that extent, but have careers in the healthcare field and know of what facilities or providers are best for certain health concerns. My preference is utilizing different tools like the ACHA to discover what provider or facility best fits me. As someone becomes accustomed to not doing something every day, the skill is lost. For example, a nurse learns that before giving a patient any medication, they must check the five rights of administration. Nowadays, nurses do not check the five rights because the computer does it for them when the patient is scanned. Technology can fail, and it is our duty as nurses to protect patients from harm and to be knowledge in skills that do not require technology. In my experience, technology is used very often and safety precautions are present if something goes wrong. For example, vital signs machine are used all the time, but if a nurse or clinical partner sees an abnormal value, they take vitals manually. Technology can also support safety. Bed alarms are safety measures that detect a patient getting out of bed and helps prevent the patient from fall injuries.
