Pursuing higher education in healthcare is what I have always desired. I believe that healthcare is a field for people who deeply care about the greater good for all human kind. However, after taking various courses in the Public Health major, I have decided to venture in a different direction. Yearning for something more towards the administrative and technical side has been a focal point in my collegiate career. This program will give me an opportunity to make a difference in an underserved population, and I can play a significant role in maintaining, collecting, and analyzing patient’s data that physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers rely on to deliver quality healthcare. Since my passion has always been assisting others and trying to improve their quality of life, with HIHIM degree I will have the opportunity to contribute in assisting healthcare organizations, their staffs, and patients. Health care and health care information are turning to become unity and are working together to facilitate improvement of health care quality and equity. Therefore, health providers and other relevant stakeholders must strive to put in place strong measures capable of effecting heightened privacy and security precautions. More transparency must also be ensured when medical care organizations and institutions are handling patient’s medical data.
Over the last 5-10 years the healthcare system has begun reformation to increase safety, efficiency, cost reduction, increasing continuum of care, and increases in information technology (IT). There are many influences that are creating this need for change including laws, regulations, and the consumers of the healthcare system. The consumer is beginning to take charge of their health and become an advocate of their healthcare needs and plans of action. This transformation has created a greater need for the healthcare system to increase the use of health management information system (HMIS). HMIS is meant to help all departments within a healthcare organization, such as a hospital, to communicate easier creating a better care experience for both the care providers and consumers. These HMIS initiatives include systems such as computerized physician order entry (CPOE), electronic medical records (EMR), health information exchange (HIE), and other electronic systems. It is these initiatives that are reforming the healthcare system. However, there is not much information analyzing these new trending initiatives and how they will help or hurt the medical field. It is these systems that will be analyzed to determine the challenges they may have for the healthcare system, and the leadership of healthcare organizations.
The future of healthcare is ever changing, and with that comes change management, which brings individuals on board with that change. According to Vora (2013), the change management model includes first, determine the need for change. Second, prepare and plan for the change. Third, implement the change. Finally, sustain the change (Carroll, 2015). As a leader, I feel that it is my obligation to not only continue with my education, but to aid others in furthering their education and
All in all, I believe that I have gained many skills throughout my time with my employer. I hope that once I do receive my degree healthcare management, I can apply even more skills to everyday challenges that may arise. In a field that’s growing rapidly, one can be assured that conflicts will always happen, and people will not always work together. With several team building activities, a higher employee morale can be achieved.
Choosing a major has never been an easy task; after high school graduation, without a college plan, many of us finds ourselves taking classes we don’t even need in the first year of college. Setting aside some times to decide what we want to do in life, what we want to study, and where we want to be in the next five years or so can help us save time, money, and most likely can direct us toward our most coveted career goal. Changing our mind along the way is typical of us, but there are always many majors to choose from; but when it comes to the healthcare field, not every single one of us interested in healthcare as a profession gets to wear the white coat or the scrub because some of us hate the sight of blood and needles. These people may consider healthcare administration as a career, but is it worth it to choose healthcare administration as a career?
A healthcare is an overgrowing field that one can find many different possibilities to choose from. When initially decided to go back to school with the goal in mind of being healthcare management. I researched many different degrees in the healthcare field; I originally thought to go to nursing school thinking that was a way to put my feet in the field and then move to a more administrative position. However, after I did a little more research in healthcare field decided to go for healthcare management. This will give me a strong background and management and healthcare, field that I always enjoy.
Reflecting back on the all the information learned this semester, I am amazed at how much I learned. Working in healthcare makes you aware of a lot of the topics that were covered, however, when you apply it to yourself, in a personal relationship, it becomes much more powerful what the impact of each topic is.
Healthcare administration provides leadership and managemnt to health care systems, hospitals, and private or public health systems. There are requirements for most professions in the health industry but with the proper education and certification, most entry-level careers are attainable. Healthcare administrators are leaders so one must be able to handle the responsibility of the job. There are characteristics that can be associated with being a health care administrator. I have learned over the course of the past few weeks that this the career path that I would like to follow and have set a few goals to help promote my career growth. All my public health courses and internship have fully shaped me to become a professional in the health field. I am knowledgeable and practiced in applying research and statistics to populations and health programs and evaluations, promoting cultural competence, identifying principles of health necessary to plan effective short and long term health interventions, and identifying community health needs. During the four years I spent in this major, I have learned so much about who I am and who I want to be. I am thankful for all my professor, advisers and colleagues who have helped me during my time here at the School of Public Health.
From this paper, I learned a lot about the job opportunities with an MHA due to all of the research that went into answering these questions and trying to get the correct information. What I noticed with the jobs with this degree from researching online, is that most of the jobs are in hospitals and are about implementing and creating plans to medical and health services. In the end, I hope to find a position with one of these 2 organizations and hopefully make a difference in the lives of
