Working as a professional registered nurse in the hospital, I realized how nurses struggle to find balance between devoting the time charting on the computer and spending time taking care of the patients. Moreover, I’ve seen nurses where they get discouraged trying to find this balance between patients and charting. As a bedside nurse, I would love nothing, but to tend to the needs of my patients. The length of time consume on electronic charting all day, take the very essence of bedside nursing away from nurses, which is caring. Reducing the time of nurses being occupied on charting by eliminating redundant tasks while conforming to their standard, are the changes I would like to make. These are a few of the reasons why I wanted to pursue a degree in informatics. I would advocate for nurses everywhere and to become an instrument in providing them a better electronic health system to work on. Consequently, I also talked to my director and clinical nurse specialist to become a super user, or go to person in our unit, which they were very receptive about it. I would get involved in the nursing informatics in our hospital to gain insight and understanding of the daily task of a nursing informatics specialist. I chose to enroll at the University of Chicago-Illinois because they are one of the leading universities in MS Health Informatics. That fact that UIC is one of the best universities in nursing informatics shows how much commitment the University has on their students to succeed. As for me, I would not want to go anywhere else, but to a university like UIC that will help me become an expert and competent in my field of nursing informatics. While I always wanted to help others, especially the disadvantaged of our society, I did not initially realize what outlet this longing would have. Ultimately, however, I found that the PA profession was the best avenue where I could unite this concern for others with my intellectual strengths and abilities.
After reading for this week assignment, I realized how in depth how useful informatics could be regarding which area of nursing practice you are at, and it is not just the use of computer when it comes to informatics. I would revise my definition of informatics is that informatics is the combination of nursing science, information science, and computer science. The use of informatics and technology helps to support the nursing practice, and it is associated with nursing education and nursing research (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2012).
According to the author, nursing practice needs to stay current with technological advances while keeping its identity as a patient focused profession. Nurses use technology to improve care from a patient?s perspective, both in quality of care and cost. At the same time, nurses must learn to balance technological knowledge with personal skills, thus providing optimum clinical care while maintaining a person-focused relationship with the patient.
