Effective Communication, Written And Interpersonal Communication

There are many ways in which I have displayed effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with my patients, their families and staff of all levels. Some examples of these skills that address the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors include:
• Always allowing for questions and concerns to be voiced thus preventing complaints e.g. I have received many compliments on how I have listened and addressed the underlying issues affecting the patient and their families. Frequently on my after-hours shifts I have been approached by family members of patients wanting to know what is happening with their loved one as they had been unable to talk to the treating team. One such example involved an elderly lady on the Acute Care of the Elderly Ward at FSH who had become delirious due to an abdominal infection. I sat with the family, who initially were frustrated as they were unaware of the current treatments or plans, and so I explained the situation regarding the lady’s infection and what the treating team is doing about it. Demonstrating empathy and compassion whilst allowing family members time to respond. During my oncology term, I was faced with a young acutely deteriorating patient who eventually unfortunately did pass away. Understandably the family were significantly distressed by the situation and wanted answers about their loved one’s illness. I spent a significant amount of time explaining, answering and listening to the family. I ensured the patient was comfortable during their deteriorating phase and addressed any concerns voiced by staff or family members. Although there was a limited amount that could be done to treat the patient, the family were very appreciative of my time, efforts, patience and clear communication.
