Recommended: Reflective essay on critical reading

When evaluating my progress as a critical reader and thinker, I have dramatically changed since the beginning of the year. At the start of the year, I was convinced that I was already a good critical reader and thinker; however, I only had a solid foundation and much to improve upon. In high school, I wrote numerous research papers and participated in my debate club. I was comfortable arguing and debating with people because it excited me. The only problem, I was debating over issues from an ethical and moral stance rather based on research and facts. Having to learn how to make arguments based on research was a huge challenge for me. This semester I was challenged to think, view, and articulate evidence and issues differently than I have in …show more content…

The assignment I feel especially proud of is the second position paper. For this paper, I had to write a side that I strongly disagree with. I felt accomplished when I finished the paper because I effectively argued for a side that I do not necessarily agree with. I also think this was the most useful lesson taught in the class because it forced me to become educated to both sides of the argument. This is very useful for the future because it gives me the experience to be able to critically think and debate both sides of an issue. I learned the most from this assignment. I am very interested in a future career of political or news anchoring/broadcasting, and having the ability and knowledge of share information based on facts and evidence is a key factor in success. I also have found that from this class, I have gained the skill to assess problem solving strategies differently. The eight qualities that a strong critical reader and thinker possess has been engraved into my brain. The two qualities that were most prevalent in my life were effective communication and creative problem solving. Some of the stories and poetry we read were straight forward while others were confusing and sometimes required a second look.
