I came into this class under the impression that I already wrote well enough and wouldn’t need to improve. However, as I progressed through the semester I learned that there is always room to grow. The first paper I produced was not at the level I was hoping but after I actively decided to improve my writing my papers became much better. Looking back on my work in the class I wonder how much my writing has changed and where I still have room to improve. Without evaluating my work I can’t hope to become any better. Through this class I have grown much as a writer but there is still more I can learn.
I found that learning by example helped my writing greatly. One of the books we read, “The Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert, influenced my writing. The book is well written in an academic style that engages the reader. Her writing also flows nicely throughout every passage. I tried to

At first I was resistant to the Turabian model for an introductory paragraph because it felt too structured. However, after reading several examples and applying the model to several other academic writings, such as Kolbert, I realized that Turabian’s model is actually very flexible. My first paper shows my original resistance to changing my writing style. Looking back it is organized rather awkwardly. It sounds like I’m trying to use the Turabian model without actually following it. Many of my sentences fell abrupt and weirdly placed. After I started using the Turabian model my introduction paragraphs became much better. My third paper, for example, has a much better introduction. The original situation is given in the first paragraph and the rest of the Turabian model is followed in the second. It flows much better than my first paper’s introduction and presents the concepts in a much better way. It show how much my writing improves when I try to learn from the examples other writers
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
English 111 was different from what I expected a college English course to be. I was expecting to have to read books and analyze the meaning of the themes. I found it challenging to have to analyze different websites and design our own. This was different from what I experienced in high school English classes. This course required that I expand beyond my comfort zone when writing essays. This required that I put more time and dedication into projects. It allowed me to learn valuable skills to use in other courses in college and I learned what abilities I need to concentrate on. I carry with me the abilities to use rhetoric devices to analyze websites, research techniques to polish the ethos of my papers, and the knowledge that I need to refine using other sources of media (i.e. websites, PowerPoints, etc.) to present an argument from English 111.
Over the course of my undergraduate career, I had many opportunities to participate in a wide variety of activities. During my freshman year, I volunteered as a tutor at the Door, a drop-in center in SoHo for disadvantaged teens and young adults. As a tutor, I worked with students preparing to enter GED programs or those already enrolled in GED programs, to solidify their academic skills and help them earn their high school equivalency. Growing up in a fairly affluent suburban town, I rarely witnessed the effects of inequity. As a tutor, however, I worked with young adults several years older than myself who had faced substantial challenges that prevented them from receiving a high school diploma. As I worked with my tutees, I learned more about the circumstances they experienced, and was humbled by their honesty and their resilience. I taught students who had extreme difficulty with simple mathematical operations, but unfailingly came to tutoring each week to keep working. I taught students who were determined to push past their earlier failures to go to college, and eventually, go on to graduate school. Perhaps most vividly, I remember a tutee who was a recent African immigrant, who at our first meeting told me that he wanted to write a novel. Having the privilege to witness the extent of human
Winston Churchill once stated “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” During my time here at English 180 I saw some improvement in my writing in terms of content. I feel as if I am more capable of writing an essay with better content than I was able to do back in High School. My essays have shown improvement because I did change my style of writing a bit and I added something different every time I wrote a paper. In English 180 we wrote several papers, but each one had a change to fit the certain criteria. Winston Churchill’s quote perfectly describes the purpose of the class English 180. Writing different pieces with a different format and branching out was key in the subjects of our writing assignments.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
My RIP companion essay was a complete mess with no structure in the first draft. I believe it was because I had procrastinated to complete both the first drafts for the RIP project and essay. I finished my RIP project then moved on to my companion essay, and the transition was vastly different because in the RIP project I was writing for a different audience than in the companion essay, which was an academic audience. In addition, I forgot that we had been given a prompt with specific instructions and guidelines for the companion essay, which gave the structure for the essay. Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
During my last 3 years of high school I volunteered with a basketball program called the Ottawa Shooting Stars which was the club I played for during my first 3 years playing competitive basketball. The program that the Shooting Stars are running is called Small Ball. It is program for developing skills but mostly for having some fun and introducing young players to the game of basketball. It manly focuses on Fundamentals such as dribbling, shooting, footwork and passing at the most basic level. The age groups of the program range from 4-7 years old. When I first started volunteering I was in grade 10 and our coach had asked us to help out with a program he was running on Friday nights at our high school gym. Being a part of Residential Summer Bridge 2015 has showed me a different way of life. I have learned that I need a lot of help with my academics. I believed I was a really good scholar when it came to academics but my grades have shown me different. I have created a different life style because before Bridge I wouldn’t do my homework assignments or even study. Every weekend I would go out and go to parties and do non-beneficial things. Now I stay in and do my homework because I have learn to do my school related stuff first and if there is time left them I could have fun. I have learned to get want I need and not what I want. To tell a story is to expand tragedies, to spread the comedies, and to share the love and wisdom throughout humanity. Poets, musicians, authors, philosophers and even aristocrats have stories to tell. As a college student and aspiring author, I will share my story at the boundary of this realm. I will proceed to claim myself to be an adequate student and dispute the reason for this by comparing a mediocre student in contrast to me, a much more sophisticated student.
Furthermore, I continued to strengthen my own habits. Educating our students to intelligently question a situation and make informed decisions is an important part of properly participating in citizenship duties within their community. Humans are observers by nature. Modeling positive traits could influence positive behavior. I respect my colleagues and students. To show respect for their ideas, personalities and character, it is crucial not to discuss student information with other students or divulge unnecessary data to another teacher not involved in their education. There is a teacher within my department whose comments regarding her student’s abilities are rather negative. Instead of allowing her to demean her students, I stand as an advocate and comment on their capabilities to do any of the work she requests because they have passed all their other science courses without issue.
When I first entered high school, I never had any indication that all my expectations would be shortly dissipated. When I thought of high school it had been the whole 90’s point of view where there were the cool kids and the cliques and the bullying and the jocks and so on. To my surprise however, people were more than their supposed position in the system, they were human, they were all free and all- like me, experiencing a brand new start to their lives.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
