An Analysis of Leadership
This paper will describe traditional and new genre leadership theories and how ESTJ personality traits can help or hinder a person from becoming an effective leader. In 2016, over 20 leadership theories and models exist in academic journals and articles including the Great Man, Trait, Behavioral, Contingency, Transactional, and Transformational philosophies (Nelson & Quick, 2011). Some theories suggest leaders are born, where other leadership authorities claim people can learn how to lead (Colorado State University – Global Campus, 2016a). Results from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory can help an individual recognize strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges so they can implement techniques to advance the positive attributes and repress the negative qualities through the course of their leadership regardless if they are a born or made leader. ESTJ personality qualities can inhibit managers from accepting change in the evolving technological landscape of e-leadership and other new genre styles, but can become a more effective leader through continual education and effective communication with senior leaders.
Leadership Reflection
Leadership is a fluent philosophy with definitions as unique as the individuals developing the descriptions. However, a majority of researchers, philosophers, and students agree leadership is “the relationship between an individual (leader) and a group (followers) where the individual guides and influences the group toward a common goal” (Estep, 2016a, p. 4; Keskes, 2014). There are downsides to power such as abuse and dominance. One who abuses power may do so in the form of taking advantages the manager does not afford to others (coming in late, leaving early, or delegating all tasks to others leaving the supervisor with nothing to do) (Nelson & Quicks, 2011). In the case of information power, a person can withhold valuable data from a co-worker who needs it to complete a project to make the individual look poorly (Nelson & Quick, 2011). Tost et al. (2013) report members with subjective power dominate the conversation, which depletes the team’s performance. Effective leaders use power ethically and refrain from abuse and dominance (Nelson & Quick, 2011).
The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Through academics and experience, I’ve concluded that leadership is a “soft” skill, more art than science, and that leadership principles can be universally applied. Leadership is defined as the action of guiding an individual or group of people. Effective leaders shape the behavior and thought process of the individuals around them. As a result, the success of an organization is often impacted by the leadership style and approach of its leaders. Even when engaging with multiple people, impactful leaders maintain their own style of leadership but occasionally change their approach based on the motivational needs of each individual. However, regardless of the style, leadership within an organization is designed to drive the performance of their employees and it is done through proficient communication. This guidance influences the culture of an organization, which subsequently, helps to shape its leaders.
A leader can be defined as a person who influences a group of people, organization, etc. in to achieving a set out or common goal. The aim of this paper is to identify the different approaches to leadership, but there is no single definition of leadership, as it can mean many different things to many people depending of their profession, environment and leadership style (Mielach, 2012).
Leadership has been written about millions of times in the past, and heading in the future, it will be the topic of many debates, books and newspaper articles asking, and in some cases answering the question, “What is leadership?” According to Peter Drucker: “leadership is lifting a person’s vision, raising his performance and building personality”.

Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership, not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. All in all, this book highlights strategies for us all to be better in our lives and our everyday interactions.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. This philosophy is going to help guide these men during turbulent times, or when they need guidance themselves. Nobody is perfect and everyone needs direction no matter how wise or gifted you are. I am no different, which is why writing this philosophy of leadership is going to be a fruitful experience for years to come.
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.

Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
After understanding the theory behind both the trait and skill approach, I was eager to evaluate and reflect on my own leadership traits. It was interesting to see how the trait approach allowed me to better understand whether or not I have certain traits considered to be important for leadership, while skills approach allowed me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses in the technical, human and conceptual skills. From completing the Leadership Trait Questionnaire (LTQ) and the Skills Inventory, I was able to reflect more on how I behave towards others in a leadership context, as well as the skills that I currently possess. Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power.
