What does ‘homework’ mean to you? Homework is defined as an out of class task assigned to students to be handed in within a time period. But is homework really worth all that stress and anxiety that most students suffer? For example, two teenage girls from Eastern China, committed the act of suicide after failing to complete homework assignments#, this just a perfect example in an extreme case of the immense pressure school children can face. So is homework really worth all that stress? I think not. Homework can have positive effects on students such as, teaching students to be responsible and to have good study habits, and to prepare them for the world of work after school. But is a lot of homework good for students? Homework also allows parents to observe their child’s education and progress. Many skills are developed through the process of completing homework such as time management, responsibility, team work, to work independently. All these are skills which they will need later in their work life. But on the other hand, teachers hand out homework with little consideration about how long the homework will take and how much homework the other teachers are handing out. Piling on the homework doesn’t improve students grades. In fact it can lower their tests scores. How is that?
