When parents enroll their children at The Hangout, they will be able to work more hours at their job. As soon as school dismisses, The Hangout makes sure your children makes it to the program safely. This program stays in session from the time school dismisses until 6 PM every day of the school week. This adds up to almost 20 hours a week extra that parents are able to work now because of The Hangout. Giving parents the oppurtunity to work more is important because it is allowing parents to make more money. The questionnaires will be anonymous. The questions will minly be about demographics and job information. The parents will first do the questionnaire while enrolling their child. The first questionnaire will include the questions about their jobs now. Questions will inquire about hours they are working, how much they enjoy working, and if they wish they could work more. The next time they fill out another questionnaire will be after the first semster of the school year. It will include the same questions so we can measure the difference. Teachers will provide homework assistance to promote independence, confidence, and increase in grades. Every day the children will have study hall. Study hall will consist of quiet time for homework. Children who do not have homework will have the oppurtunity to study or read. This is important because it teaches children proper study skills. There is a monthly open school morning that the PTO has in the auditorium for parents to come by and be informed about what is going on in the school. Various programs and grades offer workshops and meeting. Every Tuesday from 2:40pm- 4pm the school has that time frame allotted for parent engagement. Parents do not have to wait to meet with teacher on the two designated parents teachers conference. Each Tuesday, the parents can come in and meet with any of their child’s teachers without an appointment. According to statistics and studies, high school dropout rates are significantly higher in low income families due to the way they live at home. This can all change if schools get more involved with their students by creating after school programs to help with material that they don’t understand and have the school check up on students who aren’t doing as well as they’d like them to be doing.
The programs can teach children to work hard for money or work hard for success. In Chicago, Roland Fryer developed a program that helped 3,750 high school freshman in 20 schools. The CEO, Arne Duncan, had a fear that there would be a high rate of students who would drop out in ninth or 10th grade. Add on sports and other extracurricular activities and there is little time left. The added stress of working is too much for the average teen. Those students miss out on important family interactions and have less time to focus on school. While working would bring in extra income, it is not worth the loss of time for teens and their already busy days.
This is a great tool that schools can use to help connect parents to community resources that could benefit their families. As teachers, we must do what we can to make sure that our students’ most basic needs are being taking care of without this it is hard for children to be in the mind frame of wanting to learn. * The last idea that I want to mention is just any activity that I can do as a teacher that includes the family. It is vital that educators be proactive in trying to design and plan lessons that include the family.
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
