Sleep Disorder/Insomnia
Almost everyone seem to suffer from not being able to get enough sleep at some time in their life. If you are always tired then that means that you’re not getting enough sleep. As we all know, inadequate sleep which is referred to as insomnia. Insomnia is basically one of the many sleeping disorders that some people may have and is one of the most common sleep disorder. There are many different effects of insomnia which includes some may become less productive, less ambitious, have a poor performance at school, work, or their everyday life tasks. Insomnia is not an illness but it is a symptom which can typically last no more than maybe a few days or it could be long term for some people. Who gets insomnia? According to Bayer (2001) “Approximately 36 out of every 100 Americans have reported experiencing this symptom [insomnia]. However, only 5 out of every 100 Americans consider the problem severe enough to seek medical help” (p. 22).
The average adult needs at least 8 hours of sleep every night but some adults tend to get between five and six hours. When you lose one or two hours of sleep each night it can affect your health. "The single element that ties sleep disorders together is that they disrupt in one or more parts of out sleep cycle." (Zimbardo). Insomnia’s chronic inability to fall asleep quickly causes frequent arousals while sleeping or causes early morning awakenings. When you don’t get enough sleep it also causes depression and heart disease and in some cases adults tend to suffer from insomnia. If you change up your lifestyle it can help to cure insomnia and when you take the time out of your busy day to relax and unwind it can help you sleep better at night. Avoid heavy and oily meals during night and in cases of hunger try to satisfy appetite requirements by having a high content carbohydrate meal. Along with all this there are also additional requirements that the person needs to keep in mind if he is becoming vulnerable to insomnia, this includes avoiding alcohol and increased exposure to sunlight. All these curative prevention strategies will definitely prove helpful in overcoming the adverse and life-disturbing ramifications caused by insomnia. (Szuba and Kloss, 2003)
