Why Do We Need To Protect Our Environment Essay

I once heard an interesting opinion of a famous environmentalist that we should not say we need to protect the earth, because earth has been through much harder situations like the glacial epoch. Earth will still be just fine even in the most difficult environment we can imagine. It is us, the human being that will go to extinction if we don’t protect the livable environment we now have. Earth doesn’t need our protection. We need to protect ourselves. It is an issue that concerns every one of us.

Coming from Beijing, where there is probably the heaviest smog in China, I know how environment can affect our health and our lives. Research also show that way more people die from lung disease now. Wanting to make a difference, I have changed some of my daily routine into a more eco friendly way. Instead of driving everywhere, I try to take public transportation as long as I can. Sometimes I will ride a bike. Also I have changed my bad habit of leaving the light on all night.

I do think that I did not put enough effort into this and there are some other things I can do. One thing that I have been thinking is changing the light bulbs in my room. The apartment I am living in is a rather old one. Quite a few bulbs in my room are still incandescent bulbs. I can change them into CFL bulbs.
