When deciding which career was best suited for me, the first thought that came to my mind was working as a teacher and providing support to children in the suburban areas where poverty existed. The idea of caring and providing the necessary support is an important aspect to my endeavors. However, I didn’t think too much of the “caring” or “providing” aspect that can shape the choices that I make on becoming a nurse.
The decision to become a nurse lies on my mother when she was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and Crohn’s Disease in the summer of 2012. I took the initiative and applied for employment, where I am currently working as a member service representative. As a member service representative, I had indirect patient contact over the phone. My tone and delivery of the comforting words were satisfying to all types of patients that I had encountered at the Visiting Nurse Services of New York. The time I spent with the elders showed me how much nurses are needed these days. Not only was I dedicated to making sure that the patients were receiving a lot of support, but that the patients would know that the person that they can count on was the nurses. At times, I wonder if I should have became a doctor, because doctors and nurses both shared the same goals of benefiting society and improving the welfare of others. However, I decided to pursue a career in nursing because of the close relationship I could have with my patients. Nurses not only care for their patients, but to promote a safe environment that allows the patients to know that their nurses is there to help them recover at their worst time. I believe that the patient's cure is not just in medicine, but that it lies on the care that the patients receive in hospitals and their homes.
