When a child is born, he or she is given a certain sex at birth: male or female. Most children grow up happily with his or her sex assigned at birth. Unfortunately, some do not. Some may not be able to accept this assigned gender and feel uncomfortable in his or her own skin, as if he or she is living a lie. Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is associated with a mismatch between someone’s gender identity or internal sense of being male or female and his or her assigned biological sex. Many who suffer with GID may consider transitioning to an alternate gender.
Although it is questionable whether transitioning at a young age is effective, my belief is that with the proper steps and guidance, transitioning at a young age will benefit young people affording them a comfortable life.

Spack suggests genetic boys having surgery at the age of 17, in order to prepare for post-operative care to be done at home. This way when college comes around, they are physically and mentally prepared. With that said, there is significant first hand evidence that transitioning at a young age is successful. Not to mention the younger someone transitions, the less time they must live unhappy with the body they are in. Transgender adolescents are also less susceptible to mental health problems in the future due to the fact that they have been living as their gender identity for much longer than a transitioned adult. Lastly, transitioning affects those around us as well. It may be harder for friends and family to adapt to such a transformation with someone who has lived as the opposite gender for most of their adult
