Thesis Statement: The views of maltreatment on children by their parents have changed over time. The definition of maltreatment is a combination of child abuse and child neglect (Schwartz-Kenney, et al.). The definition of child abuse is loosely described as the ill-treatment of a child from an adult. It is based on cultural and societal influences and expectations. In result of influences, it was difficult to recognize and diagnose child abuse (Bannon and Carter 3; Schwartz-Kenney et al.). Child abuse injuries can be caused by hitting, biting, kicking, and a child. Those injuries can occur by a hand, belt, bat, stick or rod. A child can be neglected in multiple ways; regarding nutritional, physical, medical, mental, emotional and educational neglect. Nutritional neglect is not always intentional, in some cases, the family does not have knowledge or money to give the child a nutritional diet. Physical neglect happens when a child is not given food, shelter, or clothing. A parent could also neglect their child by not giving them medical attention or any attention at all (Schwartz-Kenney, et al.). These mothers often require help from another because they have little to no social support; resulting in the mothers being neglectful. People who abuse children have normally been abused themselves as a child. Child abuse is also seen in homes with inexperienced and young parents; because they have high expectations. Cases of child abuse are seen to happen in homes filled with stress and substance abuse (Schwartz-Kenney, et al.). The children and young adults exposed to child abuse lacked extended family support, a sense of community, and lived in poverty
