Student Nurse to Professional Nurse
Making the transition from a student nurse to a profession nurse can bring out many feelings such as joy, excitement, anxious, and fear of the unknown. Upon graduating nursing school, a student often questions themselves asking questions like “Will I be a good nurse?” or “Did I make the correct career choice?” Student nurses often find themselves comparing their clinical knowledge and experiences against the professional nurse’s knowledge and experience. As a student nurse I gained knowledge and experience through my clinical and role transition. The quality improvement tools that I utilized during my role transition are being provided a job description of what an emergency department and nurse does, an orientation checklist, and EPIC training. I think another important quality improvement tool used was communication. Leaders can help nurses gain insight into their own behavior, how it affects others, and the work environment, and how to use strategies to cope, become resilient, and advocate for workplace communication improvements at all levels (Huber p. 113, 2014). I think this is extremely important. Professional nurses have to communicate effectively working in the Emergency Department. The nurse communicates with doctors, respiratory therapist, nurse practitioners, social workers, nurse technicians, co-workers, the patients, and the families. To provide quality patient care, communication has to precise and understood. Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (S-BAR) when giving report on patients or collaborating with members of the healthcare team is a resourceful tool. Another quality improvement tool I saw during role transition was the use of an interpreter for nonspeaking English patients. This was very resourceful when communicating patient’s needs and care. During our nursing education, we are taught how to communicate with patients and family therapeutically. This skill is important to master for professional nurses when facing ethical dilemmas. I think sitting with patients silently while they are learning they have a terminal illness or grieving for the loss of a loved one is important.
