The Differences That Divide Us How do we treat others who are different than us? As much as the world would love to say that we welcome others who are different than us with open arms, this is just not the case. Since the beginning of time, society, irrationally, has learned to fear the unknown. Diversity, the beautiful languages, cultures and religions that makes the world strong, also divides us. When around others who are different than us, society is quick to make assumptions. First off, Stereotypes have plagued our generation. Assuming someone fits a common stereotype has become easy, rather than dedicating time to sit down and get to know someone.” While I was traveling with other black students, a young woman asked me what I thought of one of our teachers. My answer, phrased in what one might call “standard” English, the young woman exploded: “Eric! Stop talking like a white boy!” (Watts 1). In addition, this profiling has become an issue. Every individual comes from a rich background of cultures and beliefs that we should respect. But, when confronted with those who believe in something different from what we believe in we tend to shut them down. Also, this happens more often then we might see it, Disabled children have to be separated from their peers, not only in order to meet their needs, but to ensure the environment they’re in is safe. Thirdly, Evolution has created a divide between our generation and past generations. Unsurprisingly, over the past 50 years, things have evolved in one way or another. New ideas and methods are coming about, some will accept, some wont. But those who learn to be open minded to new things are the ones who will prosper. In brief, the world is
