This semester I was able to flourish as a writer due to essays given in class. I am now better able to analyze prompts and to communicate my ideas better on paper. Although my writing has drastically improved, it has not always been that way. As evident through past essays, my writing was poorly structured and contained spelling errors. Also through practice this semester I was better able to write a concrete thesis statement, something I was puzzled with in my previous English courses.
Also, I have trouble with when I use a quote from a book how to introduce it and explain why I chose it. I hope to overcome these obstacles next semester. However, I feel my strengths were collecting information after I understood what I was reading and also adding evidence in my papers. Once I took notes on my reading and then read over my notes a couple times it was easier for me to lay out an outline and come up with ideas to talk about. The evidence I would always choose would be quotes from the books, which I feel I picked the right ones to use.
I was mistaken. Therefore, because of the rigorous essay work each essay brought, I learned more about how to write different pieces and grow from my “failure”. When enrolling into Composition 1, I had a fixed idea that it was going to be an easy A, since I wrote in my spare time. This class
At first, it was difficult to get my ideas down and figure out what it was I would research. What I learned in class allowed me to first identify the issue I would research, write a rough draft, and hear what others had written before the final paper was due. This helped me to identify the main points, brainstorm and figure out what additional research I would need to find to support my argument. Being able to organize my thoughts from the beginning made writing the paper a much easier process. This course has helped me to grow as a writer and make
Writing can be a challenge to foreign students, but taking the writing courses and understanding the writing process are very important and stepping stone for further education. During my EN 101A semester, I had worked particularly on the use of the writing process particularly on writing a vibrant thesis statement which offers a concise solution to the issue being addressed. I had struggled to improve my expository writing through working at the writing center. In addition, I had also worked on improving my critical thinking which helped me to develop analytical skills in an effort to add my own thoughts, contemplate a particular topic and analyze important issues. My weakest area in essay development during the semester was identifying a clear thesis statement which was crucial part of the writing process.
English 1010 was exactly the class I needed to improve myself as an assertive reader and writer. This semester, I have learnt not only about genre and genre selection, but also using concise language, sources, improving drafting skills and overcoming writers block. In How to Write Anything, the various genres and sub genres were displayed. This has helped to me to identify the genre of any paper based on the type paper I’m completing. For Example, I know that if I’m completing a product review, the genre of that paper is Evaluation.
I was intrigued with it, however, it was not passion. For years I believed my writing was not good enough because I could not properly express my thought process in a manor of which others could comprehend; I believed my writing was very weak. In the beginning of this class, the reason I was late for many papers is because I did not want to hand an assignment that demonstrate my lack of writing abilities. However, as the class progressed and I continued to complete the assignments, the more confident I became in my writing. Moreover, the way I have grown as a writer is becoming more confident within the words I wrote.
I would like to start off with thanking you for having the time to review the work and effort that I have put into my English 101 Final Portfolio. In the time in class that I have had this quarter I have learned new techniques that I had not known before in writing, for example I have learned about how to build paragraphs in a correct formal way. In my work in the portfolio I hope to show how my skills as a writer have improved from the work I have done before. I plan to take the experience that I have had in this class and take it with me to help me improve as a student on other class topics. In the time that I have been in class I believe that it has helped me in a positive way to help me manage my time, along with building my confidence in writing.
Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness. My assessment of my development in writing is based on comparison of essays I have written this semester and my reading responses from the textbook. One of my first reading and writing assignments was answering the Malcolm X questions. That wri... ... middle of paper ... ...enerate fresh ideas for my future expository essay. From this course I have learned that being a writer is much more than writing grammatically correct.
My instructor and peers pointed them out, and I started realizing it on my own throughout the other essays I had to write. The most previous essay I had to write, the Argument Synthesis, had fewer grammar, punctuation, and citation errors, but those aspects could still be improved. In the Introduction Module, I said that I would like to become a better writer while taking this class. I had not made an A on any essay yet until the previous one. I made an A on the Argument Synthesis essay which made me feel that I had made much progress throughout this course.
