While Shakespeare was working at the London theaters, there was a time in which they all closed. This was by the orders of the Privy Council. All the theaters in London closed on June 23, 1592. They were closed to help prevent the spread of a severe outbreak of the plague. Many people believed this gave Shakespeare the time he needed to write his sonnets ("Poetry Foundation" 1). While the theaters were closed, William was able to work on other works.
