While Shakespeare was working at the London theaters, there was a time in which they all closed. This was by the orders of the Privy Council. All the theaters in London closed on June 23, 1592. They were closed to help prevent the spread of a severe outbreak of the plague. Many people believed this gave Shakespeare the time he needed to write his sonnets ("Poetry Foundation" 1). While the theaters were closed, William was able to work on other works. According to the Poetry Foundation he, “… turned from the business of scriptwriting to the pursuit of art and patronage… he adopted a more conventional course. Literary devices play a crucial and essential role in almost all works of literature. Literary devices are techniques used by the writer in order to conjure moods and ideas within the reader. Writers use different literary devices for different purposes. One very important literary device is imagery. In imagery, words are used to invoke an image in the reader's mind. One writer that utilizes a great deal of imagery is William Shakespeare. In William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses images of poison and death to create moods of death and sorrow.

He successfully mastered the art of explaining the traditional Elizabethan marriage ritual as well as the importance of father-daughter relationships. Although, as Lynda E. During the Shakespearean period, when Shakespeare writes, most women had to marry when they were teen, when they were in adolescence or even before. However, the men who they were marrying were in their early to late twenties. In the household that the women lived in, the men basically owned them. The women always followed men’s word, which says that the male was the dominant gender of the society. Romeo and Juliet reflects this in a number of ways. Juliet was forced to marry Paris, by the word of her father, who said that if she did not marry Paris, she would go to the streets(Shakespeare, 3.5.154-62). Women were thought to be weaker and less important than men in Romeo and Juliet because men are trying to be the strongest out of everyone, women have a lower social status, and men think they owned women in Romeo and Juliet.

Queen Elizabeth I, also known as the “Iron Queen”, was a remarkable woman of her time, she ruled with great power and longevity. She was one of the greatest feminist of time. Coming to the throne in 1558, she took the place of her father, Henry VIII. She was given one of the most difficult jobs fit for a man or King, ruling England. At the time women were second class citizens, they could not vote nor own properties and such. Surprising England with her intelligence and fierce rulings, she changed herself to make better decisions. She proved through her rulings, to everyone that females were strong and could rule just as well as a king. She refused to marry, giving a feeling of “I don’t need a man for anything.” The Queen was responsible for giving females a voice in literature and it is shown through Shakespeare’s writings.
Teens for the past five hundred years have always wanted a sexual relationship with the opposite sex. Romeo and Juliet were no different. In the beginning of “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare” Romeo is in love with this girl Rosaline. As soon as Romeo sees Juliet at the mascaraed bowl he claims he is in love. If he moved on from Rosaline to Juliet that instantly than he never loved Rosaline, he just liked her in a sexual way only, that’s probably the same with Juliet. He is still in love with Rosaline at this time but then completely forgets about Rosaline and moves on to Juliet as soon as he sees her. A fundamental aspect that adds to the high level of praise that has been bestowed upon his plays is the role of women. Although the primary protagonists in Shakespeare’s plays were men, female characters held dominant supporting roles. For Shakespeare the roles of women served to generally control the actions of the play while the male protagonists were left to be subjected by their wild emotional swings and grandiose displays of love. These dramatic and sometimes conniving exhibits of emotion were often spoken through long soliloquys that further added to the depth of the female character. The roles of women in Shakespeare’s tragedies still prove to be enigmatic even to the most adept scholar; there motives and actions provide necessary rising actions and prove to be essential to the plot. Shakespeare’s shrewd use of assigning the ability to conjure powerful emotions in their male counterparts truly testifies to the high level of complexity and female prowess that characterize the women of Shakespeare’s tragedies.
Among the many famous writers we have studied this year is William Shakespeare. Shakespeare's life was assuredly most intriguing. Seeking answers, we had simple questions we wanted to determine. What were his morals? His passions? His legacy? When studying Shakespeare, we found that his life revolved around the Globe Theatre. Naturally we wanted to see why Shakespeare spent so much of his life involved in the Globe. The first Globe lasted from 1599-1613. Additionally, this structure was called the "wooden o" playhouse. Before the Globe, there was another "Theatre", which many people do not realize. "The Theatre" prospered for 21 years. Refusing to renew the players' lease, the landowner Giles Allen caused an unexpected problem for the players. James Burbage had recently died and his two sons, Richard and Cuthbert became managers. Although Allen owned the land, the sons owned the Theatre, and they wanted their valuable timber. In desperation, the brothers decided to take action. They leased land across the river and they waited until Christmastime to strike, when they could be sure Allen was away on vacation. At night they began to dismantle the Theatre piece by piece and floated it across the river Thames. With the timber, the brothers and their friends reconstructed their cherished playhouse. Because of the saying "the whole world is a stage" they would call it the Globe Theatre. By the middle of 1599 the Globe opened and was a huge success. Audiences were packed in "the house with a thatched roof", sometimes even so much as three thousand people could be held at once. For sixpence the rich sat in the Lord's Rooms to get a better view, which were on the top half of the Globe. For threepence they sat on cushions in the Gentlemen's Rooms. For twopence they perched on hard wooden benches, but most were called "groundlings" who paid a penny to stand in the yard beneath the open roof. Interestingly enough, there were two trap doors, the trap door to heaven and the trap door to hell. Since the players already had to pay for the structure most of the actors actually lived in the Theatre. During a play of Henry the V, a spark from a cannon accidentally caught the thatched roof on fire and the whole Globe was burned down in less than an hour. Yet within a year a second Globe was built and completed in 1614 but the Puritans tore it down in 1644.

The Renaissance has been a diverse period and had people who held dear to the art and literature, which have developed over the period. Starting with literature, was well known and popular in forms of plays, which have been presented out to people in that era and even today. One of the writers that have been noticed and presented in different styles in our time is William Shakespeare. William was known for writing most of the popular plays in the 1600’s and for interpreting language which was known for being ‘Shakespearean Language’. These languages in his plays are used from the renaissance era and are more likely seen with in the other writer’s stories as well.
