The term genocide brings awful things to mind. For most, it probably directs their attention towards the Holocaust; this was definitely a gruesome and obvious example of genocide, but there are many others with great similarities that are not very well known. One of these is the decimation of the Native American population by the European settlers and the atrocious things that were done to them such as the trail of tears following the Indian Removal Act of 1830 during the settling of North America. The Holocaust might be the most well known but there have been many other incidents in history just as abhorrent. The Holocaust and Native American Genocide are different in weapons used and the motives for killing but similar in intent, effects and selection of the persecuted.
During the genocide of Guatemala , the government said one of the biggest lies to their people. They had said 40,000 people had “disappeared” from unknown causes. They didn’t disappeared , they were killed, annihilated from the face of the earth, all because they were different. Very similar to the Holocaust that occurred in Europe.

Imagine every friend, every neighbor, every single person in one city being raped, killed, tortured. In the genocide known as the Rape of Nanking, the city of Nanjing was brutally taken captive by the Japanese. On the other hand, all of Germany attacked the Jews. But both of the genocides involved killing, raping, and dehumanizing. The Holocaust exterminated a whole lot more people than the Rape of Nanking. Germany also paid for their crimes, while Japan hardly acknowledged it. Both genocides also happened during the same time period, too. The Rape of Nanking was a smaller genocide than the Holocaust, but they still have their similarities and differences.
The Rwandan genocide may have had more people killed in a minute, but the conditions weren’t as nearly as bad as the Holocaust. In Rwanda, if the Hutsus saw a tutsis walking down the street you would be killed immediately. For this genocide, the Hutsus didn’t hold the Tutsis in a camp, make them sleep in horrid conditions, burn them alive, make them work or even put them in gas chambers leading to death. However, the Holocaust was different, if you were a jew you would be treated this way. Hitler would take the Jews into a concentration camp to be worked, starved, and tortured till you become weak and ill proceeding to death.
The Holocaust was a very impressionable period of time. It not only got media attention during that time, but movies, books, websites, and other forms of media still remember the Holocaust. In Richard Brietman’s article, “Lasting Effects of the Holocaust,” he reviews two books and one movie that were created to reflect the Holocaust (BREITMAN 11). He notes that the two books are very realistic and give historical facts and references to display the evils that were happening in concentration camps during the Holocaust. This shows that the atrocities that were committed during the Holocaust have not been forgotten. Through historical writings and records, the harshness and evil that created the Holocaust will live through centuries, so that it may not be repeated again (BREITMAN 14).

The Rwandan Genocide was a terrible event in history caused by a constantly weakening relationship between two groups of people. The country of Rwanda is located in Africa and consists of multiple groups of people. Majority of Rwanda is Hutu, while a smaller amount of people are Tutsis. The genocide started due to multiple events that really stretched the relationship between the two groups to its end. One of the starting factors was at the end of World War 1. Rwanda was a German colony but then was given to Belgium “who favored the minority Tutsis over the Hutus, exacerbated[exacerbating] the tendency of the few to oppress the many”(History.com). This created a feeling of anger towards the Tutsis, because they had much more power then Hutus.
Millions upon millions of people were killed in the holocaust, that is just one of many genocides. There are many similarities between different genocides. Throughout history, many aggressors have started and attempted genocides and violence on the basis of someone being the "other".
What is genocide? “Genocide is a deliberate, systematic destruction of racial cultural or political groups.”(Feldman 29) What is the Holocaust? “Holocaust, the period between 1933-1945 when Nazi Germany systematically persecuted and murdered millions of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, and many other people.”(Feldman 29) These two things tie into each other.The Holocaust was a genocide. Many innocent people were torn apart from their families, for many never to see them again. This murder of the “Jewish people of Europe began in spring 1941.”( Feldman 213) The Holocaust was one of the most harshest things done to mankind.
The United Nations was formed on October 24, 1945, after the Holocaust, to prevent genocide from ever happening again. The United Nations is pictured standing over many graves of countries and groups that have suffered from genocide. However, many genocides have taken place since the formation of the United Nations (i.e. the Bosnian genocide). Both genocides began as simple misconception or dislike between peoples but ended in tragic and unnecessary murder. The Holocaust and the Bosnian genocide had many similarities and differences in their course of events. Unfortunately, genocides like the Jewish Holocaust and the Bosnian genocide still continue to happen today.
Even though there are differences the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust are very similar in the ways people were convinced to follow the government. Both of these genocides started with a change in government. The “Young Turks” who wanted one religion and one language told people that the Armenians were a threat to their national security and called all of them spies (Beecroft). They started with the intellectuals and the leaders. Taking their possessions away and not allowing them certain rights (Beecroft). This is similar to how Hitler told the people of Germany that Jewish people were the reason the war was going bad and they were the reason Germany was in such a weak state. Just like the Turks the Nazis wanted everyone to be the same but in a little bit of a different way. In the Holocaust they started with the political opponents (“Holocaust”). The Nazis also took away the Jews jobs and possessions (Bard 13). The taking of possessions and killings relate to another similarity between the two genocides. There have been many genocides in history, but none have had more controversial views than Rwanda or ISIS. The United States government did not intervene in Rwanda or in ISIS to the extent that was needed. The death count kept rising while the US turned their backs to what was happening, and what is happening now. The genocides committed both in Rwanda, and by ISIS, have remarkable similarities and differences in the actions taken by the United States government to contain and prevent any further killings, whether directly or indirectly.
The atrocities of the Belgian Congo and the Holocaust are two of the main events in history that have been responsible for the mass murdering of millions of people. Although these events significantly changed the course of humanity, and the story behind each one is very different, there are significant factors that make them alike as well as different. Many would agree that comparing two atrocities that affected the lives of so many people and gave a 180-degree turn to each of their countries would be something very difficult to achieve. However, by comparing the behavior of both the perpetrators and the victims of both cases we might be able to further understand the lack of morality and the inspiration that led to these awful events. The perpetrators in both atrocities tended to have a similar pattern of behavior when it came to the way they saw their victims. But, they also acted in ways where you can draw the conclusion that one set of events was not inspired by the other. These two sets of atrocities were reported to have a very similar number of victims. However, the Holocaust is one of the most reminded events in history as a period of shame, tragedy and sadness, while many still ignore the atrocities in the Belgian Congo.
