I prioritised patience as a personal value because it helps me to have self-control, deals with stressful situations and to have an optimistic approach towards people and myself and also to have empathy. Being patient helps me to achieve my goal. However, maintaining patience with service users also help me to deal with inevitable stressors. Patience, however is to wait calmly in the face of frustration or any negativity. I often times help service users, for example, those who diagnose with dementia to be calm by acknowledging their feelings. In addition, service users with dementia often times are hearing impaired, forgetful and have an aggressive behaviour. Moreover, as a care worker, I promote and empower them to be independent in doing as much for themselves whereby their coping abilities, skills and independence have been maximised. On the other hand, I make it my point of duty as the company policy states to motivate and encourage them to develop their confidence so they are able to do as much as possible for themselves. For example, allowing them to make their own coffee or get dress by themselves if they are able to. Respect Having respect as a personal value is of utmost importance for me. I like to be respected and so do others. However, I have to first respect myself before I can have respect for others. Despite the issues, sickness or symptoms of a service users, their rights have to be respected when I am present at work to support them. Moreover, all service users have the rights of privacy and dignity, their own independence and freedom of choice in which, as a care worker I have to respect and uphold with the company policy.
