What are the impacts of Shift-work on nurses and other health professionals?
I am currently studying to be a nurse and that is why I want to find out why implications my work schedule is going to have on my health. My aim is to better equip myself through this research for something many do not think twice about; work schedules.

As with previous literature, this article also discusses hormonal imbalances caused by night shift work, its health implications and mitigation strategies. Interestingly, the article goes on to discuss how the young and aged nurses dealt with shift work. Aged staff reported better tolerance of night shift work and fatigue caused by it. Both young and aged staff enjoyed the flexibility provided by shift work: freer daytime to spend with friends and family. However, young staff did report having difficulties to find time to study with the increasing workload. In addition, hypertension, high blood pressure and cholesterol were more prevalent among the aged nursing staff, due to poor sleep quality and long-term health deterioration. Ongoing health problems in some aged nurses lead to resignations resulting in the loss of experience and staff due to inflexibility in scheduling, as reported by Clendon. The common recommendation of O’Keeffe and Clendon is to have better rotation in staff scheduling to allow recuperation and perhaps have scheduling based around the health of individual

Many nurses today are not able to take regularly scheduled breaks due to the patient work load. Currently there are no state or federal regulations that restrict nurses from working excessive hours or mandatory overtime to cover vacancies. Burnout, job dissatisfaction, and stress could be alleviated if the proper staffing levels are in place with regards to patient care. Studies indicate that the higher the nurse-patient ratio, the worse the outcome will be.
