In high school, the pressure to excel in class and attend a university after graduation is like none other. I remember everyone picking which schools they hoped to attend and receiving their acceptance or rejection letters. However, unlike the rest of my graduating class, I did not see myself as being a college student.

Upon graduation, I enlisted in the military and became a Soldier. My decision to join the military came from my personality - outgoing, communicative, driven, always looking to overcome a challenge, sometimes a bit stubborn, and having a take charge mentality. I spent every day taking care of my mother - walking home from school during lunch to check on her, feeding her meals, taking her to the restroom, lying her down for bed and waking her up in the morning, and simply being physically and emotionally present in her life. This was my day to day life, because she was my number one priority and the only person I truly had. Through taking care of my mother for the majority of my adolescence, I realized my love for serving others. My mother passed away on the 23rd of April in 2014, less than a month before I shipped out to the military. After her passing, life at home was not the same and I began searching for my purpose. My purpose became serving my country.

I am thankful for my adolescent years and for my experience as a Soldier. My thankfulness comes from knowing that without those experiences, I would not be who I am today - a woman who chooses to go the extra mile, appreciates what typically goes unnoticed by others, and strives to make a difference in the lives of those around her. What I have experienced has given me a desire to never stop trying to become better, an eagerness to learn, a heart that listens and acknowledges, and the ability to pay more
