“I’m an ex-convict. I have AIDS. I’m a prostitute. I’m poor. I’m old. I’m a lesbian. I aborted my baby. I’m a teenage mom. I’m a victim of rape. I’m a drug addict. I’m an alcoholic. I’m a beggar. I have cancer. I have a contagious disease…but the nurse said, I’ll take care of you” (Rapp, A. ,2016). This quote has been making its way around the internet. I believe that it is important to remember working in the nursing field because it is not our job to judge. Nursing is a full-time profession that is always expanding one must be willing to continue to learn something new every day. Organization and time management skills are a must to fully provide care for our patients. Being a patient advocate to make sure our patients know exactly what is going on with their health. What got me into nursing was being put in a situation where I didn’t have very good nurses. I was a teenage mother who felt judged, and downgraded. This would be where my nursing philosophy builds off. A nurse must have patience, compassion, empathy and understanding. It is easy to fall behind in a day of nursing. Organizing care is one way to be able to spend time with the patient and get things done. For a new admission think ahead of what is needed in the room to provide care. Do they have a history of seizures? If so they will need seizure pads on their bed. Are they here for shortness of breath? Will they need a continuous pulse ox at the bed side? This also helps with time management. A lot of times with 5 or 6 patients splitting time up can be hard. Staying ahead of the busy day is a must. Ultimately, we must be patient advocates! some patients will just agree but not understand what they are agreeing to. It is up to us that they know, even if this means calling the doctor back in to talk to them. If they are afraid to speak up we need to speak up for them and what choices they
