What is a nurse? According to the dictionary, a nurse is someone who is trained to care for sick or injured people. Nurses are well respected because they are in a skilled profession and work to remain accident free. Even though nurses are well respected there are stereotyped every day and many people have biased opinions about them. Some of which include being stereotyped as all being women, a profession many call men gay for being involved in, always working in a hospital, will always marry someone that is the medical field, all nurses wear white hospital gowns and a cap, that nursing is easy, are reject doctors, they are all the same, and they do not make a lot of money. Every nurse should be apprehensive with the general image of nursing. It is to be said that nursing is reflected to be the most trust, honest and ethical profession. Throughout time nurses have had many images ranging from negative to positive. If people would say that nursing is only for prostitutes, they would also say that nurses are saviors. However, nurses work in an acutely stressful setting and must take out their duties in a professional manner to ascertain appropriate strategies are followed throughout their schedules. They also have a significant amount of responsibility that comes with their vocation.
Men have almost always been dominant in most aspects of life and it was not until the feminist movement has finally gained its power that it was able to bring equality amongst the sexes, but there is still a great difficulty to be able to change the mentality of an entire society. Although women tend to be the victims of sexism, men are strongly the victims in the profession of nursing because they are seen as the minority in nursing. I thought nurses follow the order of physicians and they act as aides to patients. I thought nurses only perform menial or clean up tasks. I also thought that most nurses are only certified and are not really committed enough to get their baccalaureate. This notion was mainly because most nurses wear scrubs and it is hard to distinguish between a certified nurse and a registered nurse. Now, I have a totally different view of nurses. I see nurses as patients’ best friends, because they act as caregivers, advocates, teachers and decision makers for patients. I now have a strong perception that nurses are the major thing between patients and death. Nurses are very strong people regardless of their education level because no matter what is going on in their personal lives, they are always there for their patients. As a nurse, we’ve always been taught to put our biases aside so we can provide exemplary healthcare service to everyone. We were taught to always be compassionate to everyone even though their beliefs may be the exact opposite of what we believe in, although we do have the option to opt out in certain procedures such as abortion, but never refuse to offer services to any gender. In our eyes, we treat everyone the same, no matter where they are in the pyramid or how many intersectionalities they belong to.
