“My Leader”
There is no leader in my life except my manager Colleen Watson. She is the only leader that greatly influence me throughout my life. Colleen is a leader to me because she taught me the benefits of caring for the environment and the simple things in life are not meant to be taken for granted. She is a good leader because she knows a lot of useful information and she connects well with all the coworkers. Colleen is an excellent leader because she doesn’t put anyone down or put herself before anybody else. She also taught me to be myself and live my life according to my beliefs. I believe Colleen’s behaviors of innovative and responsibility are her greatest strengths. Colleen is innovative because she looks at the past and see, what is happening now and imagined what good can come out of the world. A specific experience that I remembered her explaining made a lot of sense to me. Colleen is a great leader who is able to get a group of people working together towards one central vision or goal. Colleen also deals with lot of challenges that arise within the group, as well as, from other sources. Colleen has also her own style to work with all the leaders in the group.
Colleen works well with employees in the organization to formulate schedule, organize team and keep track of progress. She always figures out ways to solve problems, serves as a peacemaker when there is a problem. However, she is also responsible for leading the team and assist every group member incase if they face any problem. In our organization, however the task is divided according to individual’s qualification and colleen manages very appropriately and makes sure everyone works on their task according to their job duties. I have always admired people with good leadership. The ability to influence others positively is something I respect. I have leadership experiences myself with sports teams and helping younger kids, but I witness leadership every day. Whether it’s seeing someone promote a school event or just being happy that day. Being able to inspire others gives me an incredible feeling because I know important it really is to be a leader.
Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. As a child, Oprah spent her early childhood with her grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee while Oprah’s mom, Venita moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Venita wanted to become more stable and would eventually come for Oprah. While Oprah lived with her grandmother, Oprah flourished she learned how to read and write at the age of 3. By the time she started kindergarten at the age of 5, Oprah was moved to the first grade. Unfortunately, at the age of 6, Oprah’s grandmother Hattie Mae Lee became very ill. Oprah moved to Milwaukee, WI to live with her mom. They were very poor and lived on welfare. Not having enough time to give to her children, Oprah’s mom sent her to live with her dad, Vernon Winfrey, in Nashville, Tennessee.
She tells her story to anyone her asks about her past, and it always seems to affect them in a positive way. She tells anyone who is currently going through what she has experienced, to not give up, and stay head strong. She empathies with them and counsels them in any type of way that could help them. M.D. Arnold once said, “A good leader leads the people from above them. A great leader leads the people from within them.” Reading this quote always reminds me of my decision to go into the Human Resource Management and Development field. It reminds me of what being in a leadership role is all about and how the wrong kind of leadership influence can potentially break or corrupt an organization. Ever since I can remember, I have always been the friend who others felt comfortable enough to speak to about their issues. Joyce has overcome many obstacles in her life to get to where she is today. She does not boast about what she has, but teaches her lessons with conviction. The way she gets my attention is by changing her tone, adding anecdotes about her life or other people she knows. She does not stand in front of her audience and just talk, but she engages them on a level which everyone can understand.
She utilized the “Creator Trait” from “Team Dynamics” when addressing the issue of strikers preventing those who wanted to work from doing so. She used the “Full Range Leadership” “Transformational Leadership” trait of “Individualized Consideration” when a member of her team needed additional coaching on speaking to the media. Margaret Thatcher was also an “Ethical Leader”. Her conviction to the “Critical Thinking” characteristic “Free Thinking” paved the way for Great Brittan’s economic recovery. Her ability to “Discern, Declare, and Do” turned Great Brittan’s economic woes around. On a much smaller scale, I was able to employ the “Visionary Leadership” trait “Individualized Consideration” when encouraging one of my members to volunteer. I was also able to use the “Ethical Leadership” principle of “Discern, Declare, and Do” to respond to a Staff Sergeant’s appointment request in an ethical manner. Ms. Barrett’s positive attribute that makes her the exemplar ethical leader is her use of the altruistic approach to leadership (Wharton School, 2008). She credits her altruistic approach to leadership as inspired by her mother who was of the opinion that work was about making a positive difference in the lives of others. It was all about empowering others and creating a positive work environment. She follows the principle of treating everybody equally and in the way that she would want to be treated. For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.
Her level of commitment and passion for what she does makes me think that I could get consumed in my role. It would be challenging for me to work for someone who is so focused, articulate, and disciplined about her work that it could be overwhelming. It appears that Sheryl has clear expectations in terms of her commitment to her job and her family. She has publically stated that she is home by 5:30 pm to be with her family (Ignatius, 2013). I know that I can go “all in” and in turn, lose focus on other things around me. While it could be intimidating, I would certainly benefit from working for a leader who establishes clear expectations and empowers me to find ways to do the things I want to do in my life. When the leader leads by his/her own example it is easier for me to observe how he/she manages and prioritizes the work without as much internal questioning as to whether I am working as hard or being as effective as
Almost everyone has had the misfortune of having a leader that should not be in the position of leading others. Unfortunately, I have been in that position. I have had bad managers and supervisors in not just one job, but in two entirely different jobs. One of the jobs was a nutrition associate in a hospital kitchen. The other job was at the restaurant, Cracker Barrel, as a hostess. I will be pulling my experience from both jobs to explain why these leaders were not fit for the position that they held and what they could have done different to be a more effective leader.
Kate needs more of an agreeable personality. She should work on her friendship with everyone in the office to increase her power. The easiest thing she could do is start greeting her co-workers when she arrives or maybe go to lunch with them. Likable people are viewed as more trustworthy and more persuasive. • Kates direct reports were becoming more resentful and less productive, which means she does not have the “whatever it takes” attitude.
Ethical leadership organizational ethics and socially responsibility are inseparable (Johnson). Leadership is not a inherited gift or family heritage; it is not a degree from an ivy league graduate school. Becoming a leader is an intentional process of growth that must be lived out experientially (Mullane). Ethical leaders demonstrate three distinctive characteristics, knowledge, action and character. Leaders have to have the ability to say “yes” or even “no” to a never ending series of challenges. A leader needs to be able to define their values, character and leadership style. When accepting the role of leadership you become encumbered by ethical issues and concerns. .
When I think of someone who is a great leader I automatically think about current and previous managers I have had over the years, and honestly I cannot say that any of them are the definition of a great leader. So after I looked up many different definitions of a leader all of them basically defined a leader in the same way, someone who leads people. So, a leader does not typically have to be a manager it could be a teacher or a parent. That is when I realize that a great leader has always been right in front of me teaching me great values, and that is my mother.
