My interest in nursing dates back to my sixteenth birthday when I could finally obtain my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license. At a very young age, I had discovered the impact I could make in someone’s life through a career in nursing. While pursuing my degree in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, my passion for people continued to flourish, specifically vulnerable populations. Eagerly I started my career in Pediatrics, however, I found myself wanting to leave a bigger lasting impact on my patients’ and families’ lives. I started exploring and shadowing colleagues in Nurse Practitioner roles. One of my goals as a Family Nurse Practitioner is to reintegrate basic nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices into each patient I care for. Although we have made huge strides in modern medicine, I think it is often forgotten how much lack of education there is on healthy lifestyles for patients. In many situations, I have seen healthcare providers not addressing ways people can improve their health through prevention. For example, many Pediatric patients I have cared for are diagnosed with Asthma. I have spent many times educating parents on lifestyle choices in which can increase Asthma exacerbation incidents. I have had parents tell me about the lack of education they had received on these preventive measures when their child was diagnosed. I want to change the culture of how we treat someone’s health. I want to listen to each individual’s situation and initiate and manage patients holistically. My hope is to empower patients to educate the next generation to live healthy lifestyles and prevent our nation from becoming chronically sick. I know that as a Family Nurse Practitioner I will be able to create trusting relationships and make a positive impact in this area of
