Many people have always been undecided regarding the career that they want to pursue. As they get older and view the many choices in careers, they realize that a career in the medical field is the best choice. Being a nurse interests many people because it requires the study of the human body and many other great opportunities that nurses have in this career. Once the career of nursing has been researched, it is brought too many attentions that there are various types of nurses. The desire to help and care for those in need is the attitude needed to become a nurse. The history, requirements, position, and reflection of nursing are what have the highest attention about nursing. Although nursing has not always been considered a profession, it has been known in the Unites States for many centuries. In the 1900s, women were not educated in medical art, but men always counted on them to take care of the sick or wounded people. With the organization of the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the Unites States, the history of nursing started. It became clear to people all across the United States that preparation was needed to protect the sick the injured and sick from unskilled nurses, who had no well-known knowledge to give the proper care to injured. In the early 1900s, almost all of the United States passed a nurse licensure law. Training hours became shorter and qualifications were strictly enforced for attending nursing schools. During the Great Depression, nurses attending school had a difficult time. The Works Progress Administration used most nurses. Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on in media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many will mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians support staff. Of interest in this paper is why people choose to study nursing in university or college. From students just graduating high school to mature student who have prior degrees or education, nursing is a popular choice as a path to study

There are too many times that the nurses are taken for granted as a part of the school system. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the school nurse was completely unknown, even though diphtheria, measles, scarlet fever, chickenpox, and many other eye and skin conditions affected thousands of school children, and not to mention all of the injuries that could occur from day to day at school, in class or during recess. But, thanks to Lillian D. Wald and her visions, efforts, dreams, companions, and her hard work, the situation in most schools changed. In 1902, the school-nurse program began to succeed, and it was one of the very first steps in the development of the public-health nursing system in the United States.
The goals of the nursing profession have remained relatively stable for centuries. On the other hand, compensation for nurses has undergone many changes. Early nursing services were mainly voluntary and related to religious practice. Early on nurses did not receive any form of compensation. In other words, nurses were not paid for the services that they performed. In early cultures, human life was less respected and caretakers generally had very low status. The first to demand higher education for nurses were The Sisters of Charity, which was established in the 1500s, was the first nursing order with a systematic education program (Wolfe). By the 1800s, the nursing profession and nursing education were undergoing major reforms. In the United States, the civil war stimulated the growth of nursing and after the war, nursing education and practice expanded as nursing schools provided classroom instruction as well as clinical practice. Traditionally viewed as a female dominated field, nursing is one of the most underpaid occupations when compared to male dominated job categories.

Nursing is one of the oldest professions. It isn’t a static occupation, as it has changed frequently over time. Its development and evolution has changed differently depending on the historical influences. As of today the nursing profession is changing and becoming larger and greater. Nursing has gone from being a career that did not require an education, to being one that is very respected and demands a high education.
Nursing is a promising career that offers many rewards to caring individuals. It is more than just a job that one attends day to day. Nursing is a career that kind people get in to because they are passionate about life and everything is has to offer. They care for people they have never met before in such a way that makes the patient feel comfortable and able to relax. In a way that makes it possible for the patient to recover from whatever they have encountered. If I am going to spend valuable time and money on education, I want to a job that I absolutely love. I want to have the satisfaction of knowing that my job is safe even when times are rough. Interviewing Jennifer H, a Registered Nurse at a local Banner facility really helped me get insight on what the position has to offer. I have encountered many people who are not passionate about their job and just show up for a paycheck; choosing a job in the medical field provides people with the same check, but also offers job security, advancement opportunities and numerous benefits for the employee and their famil...
