When someone hears holistic nursing their mind may immediately jump to a form of hippie nursing with little to none scientific background or accuracy in the quality of care. This belief however is extremely inaccurate as to what holistic nursing really is. Holistic care can be defined as to when the nurse honors the patient’s wishes and takes into consideration the social, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the patient’s life (American Holistic Nurses Association, n.d.). Holistic nursing is growing in popularity amongst patients because of its open communication between nurse and patient, its unique approach to health and healing, as well as the comprehensive care it can provide. These alternative treatments include acupuncture, meditation, and therapy among many others.There is growing evidence that the desire for alternative medicine is expanding because people undergoing procedures in today’s health care system has had unmet needs as well as feelings of being uncared for (Acari & Flanagan, 2015). Alternative medicine is able to provide patients with treatments that provide relief for hard to cure problems such as back pain, neck pain, and arthritis. Many of these alternative treatments have been shown to be successful for various problems. Comprehensive care focuses on healing all parts of the individual and not just the physical part. Holistic nurses practice comprehensive care in various ways, one example is providing interventions. Recine (2015) states that her forgiveness interventions have been shown to be “Good for our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing” (p. 161). This kind of comprehensive care will yield better results than traditional treatment such as prescription medicine because it is encompassing everything about that person, and what makes them who they. Comprehensive care dresses multiple aspects which can further explain why the patient is feeling a certain way or is not healing. Comprehensive care is becoming more attractive to patients because it is a more personal method of treatment, and can effectively address ways to approve their life with whatever their problem is that they are trying to treat. Holistic nursing provides a personal, caring, and respectful relationship between the nurse and the patient. Holistic nursing has concepts that allows the patient to feel like their values and opinions are heard and respected. This field of nursing focuses on open communication, alternative treatment as well as comprehensive care. All three of these components are attracting patients to get care in this field, when today’s health care is increasing becoming impersonalized. Holistic care is growing
