My e-Portfolio is an opportunity for me to share my work and personal experiences that have influenced my nursing practice. My e-portfolio highlights my progress towards my nursing goals and my learning experiences. In addition, it is an easily accessible introduction to current and potential educators, colleagues and employers. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. My first job after I graduated was as a substitute teacher. My original plan was to return to school to pursue a career as a physical therapist. After finishing up term one of my nursing career, I can officially say I feel nursing is most definitely the profession I have been searching for. I have had an amazing experiences and practice by going to clinical which helped me improve upon my nursing skills and EOP SLO. It can be seen, being prepared, maintain professionalism and safe practice, having exceptional communication, respecting culture, adapting care across the lifespan, promoting health education, and having an admirable nursing process were all valued and demonstrated by me.
Nursing came in a round-about way for me. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already disregarded the nursing field due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) that had left a negative impression about the nursing field on me. I entered college planning on a pre-med or biology major. I had built up a vision of college being different- scholarly, intellectual, advanced- different somehow than school before. I soon was disillusioned. My first biology course was a bitter disappointment and I turned away from any thoughts of a medical/health related career altogether.
I have imagined myself in several different careers that have interested me as I've been growing up, from styling hair to being a fashion designer, and even a professional singer. Now, even though it is crazy to believe time has flown by so fast, I am at the age where I am deciding what I want to major in. Even though all of those professions I have listed above were very interesting, there was one job when I was growing up that I knew would be a stable and interesting profession: a nurse practitioner. I have always been interested in health sciences and seeing as though I'm familiar with a doctor’s office/hospital setting due to being born with a birth defect, I felt that nurse practitioner was the most suitable job for me. Nurse practitioner would be a good career choice for me because they are paid well, are in high demand, do many interesting things, and they can work in multiple different settings.
My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I am eager and excited about starting nursing school, and having my dream which started as a young girl to come full circle. I am convinced I am a good candidate because I have the innate drive to complete the program. I am willing to learn and use those skills and knowledge acquired to provide something meaningful to the society and humanity. I have the personal determination to face the challenges and rigors of nursing school. With hard work, perseverance, and determination I believe I have the essential character to be successful as a nursing student and an excellent quality nurse in the near future. A degree in nursing paves ways for other degrees to emerge especially for those interested in furthering their education in health care. I am committed to continue to pursed advanced degree in nursing ultimately becoming a nurse practitioner. . In the next five to ten years from now, I want to write articles and books about nursing and healthcare related. Therefore, I believe that if I improve myself further positively, I will grow from strength to strength and one day my paper will be read in one of the prestigious newsletters, journals, and textbooks. All I knew was that I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. So, I analyzed the experience I had with my mother when she was having her stroke. I remember that she started slurring her words, was having trouble just talking to me, and just not acting like her usual self. I remember how I kept telling her that I was taking her to the hospital and how she kept refusing. I remember wanting to just take her home from the hospital and the rehab facility and take care of her myself. Sadly, my mother wanted to live with my older sister after being discharged from the hospital. At first I decided to pursue nursing and even started out as a nurse aide. I loved being a nurse aide. I loved taking care of patients. I loved my job at that time but I felt like I only accomplished half of what I wanted. The fact that I also had a difficult time dealing with the administrative part with the hospital was still lingering in the back of my mind. It finally dawned on me one day that I my true passion was actually healthcare administration not nursing. The only problem about going back to school is funding. I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. As nurses, we care for patients through illness, injury, aging, health. We also promote health, prevent diseases and teaching the community; that’s what I love about nursing. I have been a licensed practical nurse for about 19 years and becoming a registered nurse has always been a plan for my future. Having to raise a family at a young age prevented me from continuing my education right away. My family is now more self-sufficient and I’m able to attend school and further my nursing journey and education.
Nursing school has been a journey where I have done and learned new things. It hasn’t always been easy for me during these last few years in nursing, but I pushed myself to do my best and get the most out of my education. There is a lot to reflect on as there has been many different things that I have experienced that have shaped the nursing student I am today. I took the process of being in nursing school step by step and building up my confidence each step of the way. With this portfolio synthesis, I will reflect on how I met the program outcomes in my nursing education and reflect on the artifacts that embodied my accomplishments in the nursing program.
Nursing is one of the onerous and highly demanded professions in the U.S. as they work to promote good health and prevent illnesses. Registered nurses (RNs) inform patients and the public about various medical conditions; treat patients and help in their rehabilitation; and provide guidance as well as emotional support to patients' families. RNs use substantial judgement in providing a wide variety of services in our society. As other future nurses, my main source of inspiration to become a nurse comes from an intrinsic desire to help other people and care for them in times of need. My choice of nursing as a career was inspired by past experiences that made me appreciate the field and its virtues. My mother was an obstetrician-gynecologist in China. In the nursing atmosphere, you get to deal with many numerous aspects of patient care ensuring variety and the opportunity to juggle more than just one kind of task.
