Introduction I am completing a structured report into the role of a medical secretary. I want to explore what the job role entails as I have a keen interest in pursuing a career in this area. A medical secretary is a member of staff in a health care facility such as a hospital or doctors surgery. They perform administrative and supportive tasks, should have knowledge of medical terminology and be familiar with various medical procedures and business practices. There are lots of employment opportunities in hospitals, GP surgeries and healthcare companies. The website Payscale.com states that the average salary for a Medical Secretary is €26,645 per year. 98% of those employed in this sector are women with just 2% being men. Recommendations With this report I have established that gaining a Medical Administration QQI Level 5 qualification is the best way to pursue a career in this area and gaining some work experience is a must. You must be able to work under pressure whilst remaining polite and calm to your colleague’s and the public. Attention to detail is vital, as is a high level of discretion to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. The Health and Safety Act The Health and Safety Act is a very important Act as your employer has a duty to ensure you have a safe working environment.
