The leadership style combination between autocratic leadership and empowerment leadership would give the futuristic cutting edge per se, to create a diversified ultimate decision making policy. Autocratic leadership, which is a style that leaders who make decisions on their own without consulting employees enjoy and empowerment, which is a practice in which managers lead employees by sharing power, responsibility, and decision making with them (Boone, L. E., & Kurtz, D. L. 2009 p. 260-270). This mixture creates responsibility and accountability. If the leader is made to lead then, in return they will make certain key decisions based on experience, proven results and a “pocket” of advisors that will guide them based on their on comprehension of the field along the way. This creates a “hierarchy” which is necessary to let the employees who are coming up on the ladder to have a cause and effect “history” so to speak, for many different common and uncommon situations to use in the future.
In one’s opinion, when one combines these two leadership styles, in common and uncommon situations, one may see higher productivity and overall accountability within employers and employees – giving the workers a sense of self-respect within the company and experience to handle issues on their own as well as, the ability to be noticed in leadership aspects. However, one also must realize there are just as much cons to autocratic and empowerment leadership styles. Because the production level of the mill was low when the new plant manager arrived, it is no surprise that a quick change in the type of management—to autocratic—quickly pushed all employees to raise production. However, it is likely that the style of leadership has taken its toll on every level of management in the mill, and that is why we’ve seen a drop in production in the last 18 months. Autocratic leadership is a rigid form of management and if any tasks are delegated, they are done so in a very specific way. But, generally, autocratic leaders are not known to delegate tasks effectively and high levels of management are usually the only people with any sort of authority. Empowerment, as discussed in the
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
Ellen Kullman, shares a mixed background. Though born in Turkey and raised in Italy, her parents are both of Jewish Iranian descent. However she grew up there since the age of five as a permanent resident who never became Italian. She further traveled to the United States on a student visa, a work visa, obtained her green card, and finally became a U.S. citizen. She holds a bachelor of sciences degree in mechanical engineering from Tufts University and a master’s degree in management from Kellog/University. Here is how she reached the top: a Sales Rep at Westinghouse where she discovered her passion for business and a Management Trainee at General Electric. She joined DuPont as a Marketing Manager in 1988 where she quickly moved up the corporate ladder and ultimately became the first female CEO of the 210 year old organization in January 1, 2009. Away from work, she married and had three children. Ms. Kullman travels the world to promote face to face relationships with her enormous corporate team but believes her own family is the most important. She is the 19th executive to lead the company founded in 1802. Prior to becoming CEO, Ms. Kullman was president of the company from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, 2008. In 2012, Ms. Kullman was ranked at number five in Fortune’s list of Most Powerful Women. Though DuPont is known for its dominance in chemicals, since becoming CEO Ms. Kullman has pushed the 210 year old company into unexpected new businesses (World of CEOs Dossiers, 2012).
The result is a relaxed atmosphere, but one where there are dew guidelines and directions. This can sometimes result in poor productivity and lack of motivation as employees have little incentive to work hard. Autocratic leaders centralize power and decision making in themselves. They structure the complete work situation for their employees, who are expected to do what they are told and not think for themselves.

Leadership is the glue that binds any business together, identifying and understanding your type of leadership style can ultimately aid you in becoming a better leader in your professional career. Autocratic leadership theory is a part of the behavioural approach. In this leadership theory, leader makes all decisions and uses power to command and control the followers to achieve goal. According to Lewin(1939), “autocratic leaders are associated with high-performing groups, but that close supervision is necessary and feeling of hostility are often present” (p.173). It is incredibly efficient and tasks are completed quickly. Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when decisions need to be making quickly. For example, in emergency situation surgeon uses this theory because the patient’s situation is between life and death and there is no time to discuss with other members. Bass (2008) mentioned in the Leadership styles and theories article, “Autocratic leaders can be effective because they create good structure, and determine what needs to be done. They provide rewards for compliance, but punish disobedience” (Giltinane, 2013, p. 35-37).
From the research done by prominent studies, we can see that all the aforementioned opinions they have on empowerment are valid. However, none of these opinions considered the likelihood that self-determined and motivated employees may overpower managements’ authority as they tend to believe highly of themselves. This could, rather than boosting productivity, lead to tension among workers and retardation in job performance.
Decision making is a task which needs utmost balance on the part of the leader. One sided decisions when team input is necessary or resources going into a lot of group decision making process when the decision itself is not so crucial can turn out to be big result influencing part of the outcomes of a leadership experience. Leadership demands a lot of adaptability where the style of leadership to be followed, a complete leader driven or group driven is to chosen based on the type of decision to be taken and the situation in which the decision is to be taken.

According to Manion (2014), a leader is a person who is able to positively influence a group of people and develop their ability to accomplish a goal (Manion, 2014). According to this definition of leadership, it suggests that every individual has a likely chance to become a leader. Every time one voices an opinion or an idea, they influence others in some form of way, therefore, they function as a role of a leader. Lewin, Lippitt and White (1939) suggest that there are three types of leaders: authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire (Lewin, Lippitt, & White, 1939). Authoritarian, or autocratic leadership, is a leader that dictates all the decisions within a group of individuals (Lewin et al., 1939). There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
Team leaders perform actions to get results from their team work and try to eliminate all the future risks and threats to their team unity and organization. They join hands rather than compete for achievements. But, solo autocratic leaders test and evaluate their follower’s determination and followership through giving them more risks and competition. They take radical measures to achieve and bring change.
