I have began to understand the hardships the LGBT community encounter especially Latino gay men. Latino gay men are not only faced with being ostracized for being gay but they are also marginalized for being considered a minority. In the Latino culture, some gay men find it easier to hide their identity from their friends and family than to live freely and love whomever they please. I have gay family members that have lived their entire life hiding their gay identity to our family in fear of losing what they worked so hard to get. Remaining invisible to society is common in gay men because it is safer and will only be accepted or considered normal if they portray a heterosexual man regardless of their true feelings. To understand diversity, we must consider that everyone has gone through different situations in the past that have shaped us the way we are today. Some of us have a background of oppressions seen though our family generations and some have seen very little of how people are being ostracized for being different or not fitting the norm. All the topics in our 202 class have been eye opening to members in the class because these are topics have not been heard of or learnt in the past. Realizing that some of are privileged and some of us are not is a big link to the course content and this …show more content…

A large part of the population does not identify as heterosexual; therefore, it is our duty to stay informed of the various sexual identities. We cannot assume that we can use our skills on every single person because everyone is essentially the same. We have to understand that some of us have privileges that we might not even recognize are there and there are some that have to face a lot of prejudice. Thanks to this project, I have more knowledge I did not have before on the gay community specifically to Latino
