You receive a phone call that your child was involved in a vehicle accident and has been rushed to the hospital. The nurse attending to your child meets you without a firm handshake and limited eye contact. They then tell you that the situation is dire and scurries away to get the doctor, leaving you in shock. Everyone has had one time in their life a bad experience with a healthcare professional. These experiences lead to broken trust between patients and the health system, and a decrease in patient satisfaction. Jean Watson created a model based on the human caring theory. Watson believed in a transpersonal caring relationship, and by effectively using the caring theory it could improve the overall health of individuals and families.
Jean Watson is a nurse that studied psychiatric and mental health while receiving her doctorate in the fields of educational psychology and counseling (Blais, 2011). Watson’s care theory is based on the act of caring being the center of nursing. Always be ready to learn from others and apply new practices that can help patient’s health status improve. Put myself in the patient’s place, and make sure to demonstrate behaviors that I would want someone to display. When providing care I want to show that I am competent and have the patient’s trust that they are in good hands.
