Keith, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your analysis on the article that you chose in regard to gun control. I agree with most of your analysis, but I have found a few more points that I would like to add after analyzing the article for myself. I would say that this article could also be considered a quantitative article because of all of the different studies surrounding armed violence and the statistics that were used to form this article. Like you, I also found this article to be ideological in nature. The author tends to lean in one direction and only really emphasizes one aspect of violence in Brazil and that is to have an anti-gun regime. However, I found that the author also looks at the bigger picture and emphasizes more ideas that will

In his article “Gun debate? What gun debate?” Mark O 'Mara discuses the controversial issue of gun control. O’Mara takes the tragic school shooting in Oregon as an opportunity to voice his opinion on the debate of guns. He clearly states his position and explains that gun violence has increased enormously because of the lack of command by the government and support from the public to speak out against it. O’Mara claims the issue is no longer a debate because it is so evident that guns have become a significant problem in this country and therefore actions must be taken to control and govern gun laws. In his article he attempts to raise awareness to the severity of the issue and tries to persuade his readers to take a stance against gun violence
Guns have possessed the spotlight of almost every news station. From the latest tragedy of a shooting killing innocent men, women and children to the arguments centering around if our gun laws possess strict enough qualities to keep our country safe. Charles C. W. Cooke, the author of “Gun-Control Dishonesty”, spreads his conservative view on the topic by ripping away any hope for a brighter day. Cooke’s main idea states that if nothing has happened to make gun law more strict even after the lives of innocent children were mercilessly ripped away from their young bodies than nothing should or could ever change. Left, right, Liberal, Conservative, Democratic, Republican. There are a lot of synonyms for the sides of our nation divided. Divided on many things: religion, political views, morals, etc.. For a nation that prides ourselves on extraordinary security and unity, it is quite ironic that so many issues can cause such distress and uproar within communities. One such issue is gun control. As a white male in a middle-lower class family that has never owned a gun, I may be somewhat biased. Objectively as I can, I am going to report the facts and more importantly, try to find the core issues at play.
Aroung the time of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the controversial and widely argued issue of gun control sparked and set fire across America. In the past decade however, it has become one of the hottest topics in the nation. Due to many recent shootings, including the well known Sandy Hook Elementary school, Columbine High School, Aurora movie theater, and Virginia Tech, together totaling 87 deaths, many people are beginning to push for nationwide gun control. An article published in the Chicago Tribune by Illinois State Senator Jacqueline Collins, entitled “Gun Control is Long Overdue” voiced the opinion that in order for America to remain the land of the free, we must take action in the form of stricter gun laws. On the contrary, Kathleen Parker, a member of the Washington Post Writers Group whose articles have appeared in the Weekly Standard, Time, Town & Country, Cosmopolitan, and Fortune Small Business, gives a different opinion on the subject. The conversation of gun control and gun regulation has been a great debate over the decades. NRA Executive vice president Wayne LaPierre, in his speech on Newtown Shooting that occurred on December 21st, 2012, addresses the topic of gun control and argues that guns are not the cause of gun violence. LaPierre's project is to instead of gun control and decreasing the numbers of guns, increase the numbers of guns to solve the problem of gun violence. On the other side of debate, an American journalist, Nicholas Kristof, in his journal, "Do We Have the Courage to Stop This?" argues that guns are the cause of gun violence, but they should not be banned. Kristof's project is to regulate guns with many cautions. While these two authors have different arguments and projects, they use similar strategies to advance their claims. This paper will focus on the way each author strategically uses compare and contrast, cause and effect, and problem-solution to advance their claims and how effective these strategies are used.
Guns debate you. More gun control laws would not reduce gun deaths it would increase gun deaths because we need self. If we had more laws on guns the population of guns with criminals would shoot up. People need guns to protect their families and themselves. People need guns to survive with other deadly people in the world. The NRA is against this person who is trying to put these laws in. (Hillary Clinton) People need guns. I say this because the Military uses guns to protect themselves. Why should we not. We need guns in our lives they help protect your family and mine.

The 2nd Amendment states that, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This amendment gives people the right to bear arms and not be penalized for it. People tend to choose to own guns because they want a weapon that makes them feel safer. However, the second amendment applies to militias not civilians, so there’s no reason to let people have the right to bear arms. It tends to put people at ease yet, with all of the recent school shootings people are rethinking the second amendment. Many people are starting to believe that if the government gets rid of the right to bear arms then everyone would be better off and there would be many less school shootings. The issue of gun control is a largely debated topic. Shootings have been a major issue, yet no one has a solution to the problem. Although, In the wake of so many tragic mass shootings, like the recent Parkland, Florida shooting, the conversation tend to pull in two directions; Those who believe gun laws should be less strict and those pushing for more restrictions. The Government should ban gun control because of it leading to many shootings in the United States.
When the security of a society is threatened by a prevalent violence associated with specific weapons, the government should pass a strict law to restrict those dangerous weapons. In today’s society of the United States, the loose restriction regarding the excessive possession and use of guns has led to many mass-shooting incidents in this country, so, the is a raising demand in this country that the gun has to be restricted. The prevalent gun violence across the country is correlated with a large amount of privately owned guns. Therefore, strict gun control laws are necessary for maintaining and improving the security within the American society.
Strictly regulated guns is our only option, mostly because the amount of gun-related deaths are increasing. There is no reason an ordinary person should be walking around the street with a gun, especially if they have no license or certification. The government needs to have a better system and regulation on where guns are being sold and to who they are selling them to.
