Did you know that there were over 2,000 gods and goddesses in Ancient Egypt? Some gods had the body of a human and the head of an animal. When I read that, I was shocked! I would’ve never guessed that there would be so many gods in Egypt. In addition, I found the idea of an animal head stuck to a human body disgusting! I just didn’t believe this, so I decided to find out for myself.
The Ancient Egyptian were polytheistic most of the time, which means that they believed in multiple gods. When Akhenaten was pharaoh, the Egyptians were monotheistic, meaning they worshiped only one god. He ended the worship of other gods and claimed that Aten, the lord of all was the only god in Egypt. The Egyptians didn't like this idea, so on their own, they changed back to being polytheistic.
In Egypt, worshiping the gods was a huge part of their life. The Ancient Egyptians worshiped gods for several reasons, one being that the gods were often the ones who made sure Egypt was running smoothly. Also, the Egyptians usually depended on the gods for good crops, the win in a war, to help in a crisis, or any other help needed. Some gods were worshiped in large temples by the pharaohs and priests while other gods were worshiped in people’s own homes.
Some gods were shown with a human body, and a head of an animal. Most of time, the animal and the god have something in common. For example, Anubis, the god of Embalming, is represented with the head of a jackal because of its habits. One of the main reasons the Egyptians even made a mummification god was because the jackals often wandered around the tombs and graves. As you can see, Ancient Egyptians believed in thousands of gods. Without the gods their lives would be miserable, or they would have no lives at all! The gods gave them water from the Nile, sunlight, beauty, and the basic things a person needs and wants. The gods were important and useful in their lives. The history of every god was interesting because it was unique and very detailed. I was amazed by some of their abilities. I hope I have more opportunities to study Egypt in the future.

On each shoulder of the wooden coffin featured paintings of a baboon that was raising its arms in a worshiping position. Also the paintings of two jackals, gods of embalming, appeared on the base of the coffin, representing veneration and protection of the deceased. Symbolism played an important role in establishing a sense of order. The fake beard in ancient Egypt was symbolic and meant wisdom, high rank, wealth, etc. In the usage of hierarchical proportion, the size of figures indicated their relative importance. Anubis was the Egyptian god of embalming and the keeper of secrets. He was associated with the mummification and protection of the dead and journey to the afterlife. He was portrayed man with a jackal’s head, or in jackal form holding a flail in the crook of his arm and wearing a ribbon. In the Old Kingdom he was the most important God, where he was associated with the burial of the pharaoh. He was very important because the Egyptians worshiped two things: 1. the gods and 2. The dead. The ancient Egyptians also believed in the afterlife. So another reason why Anubis was so important was because, on your travel to the afterlife he was there waiting for you. He takes your heart, weighs it and decides your fate in the underworld depending on how heavy your heart is compared to a feather.

Religion was a major part of Ancient Egyptians’ lives. Their faith was so engrained in them that it was more of a lifestyle than a set of beliefs. The Egyptians practiced polytheism, or the worship of many gods, and they believed that their pharaoh was a god on Earth (Doc 3). The people worshipped the pharaoh and gave him all respect and power. They believed that their two main goals in life were to keep the pharaoh and the other gods happy and to live a good life so that they may enjoy a happy life after death. Their shared faith strengthened their society because everyone was working toward the same goal. Groups were not divided based on what god they worshipped. Instead, the fact that every person lived to please the same gods and wished to go to the same afterlife gave them something in common and brought them together as a community. Sumerians also practiced polytheism and believed that their priests were connected to the gods. The people thought it was their responsibility to keep the gods happy, and believed that if the gods were pleased, they would allow their people to be content as well (Doc 6). It was an ancient Chinese practice to heat and crack bones, and then read them as prophecies. These prophecies ranged from things like, “If the king joins with Zhi [Guo] (an important Shang general) to attack the Shaofang, he will receive [assistance].” (Document 3) to simple matters like, “Lady Hao’s (a consort of Wu Ding) childbearing will be good.” These bones gave insight into the future for the Chinese people. They were able to believe that they understanded more about the universe than before, giving them a new sense of security in their faith. In a different way, the Egyptians found security in their stance with the gods they believed in. They, instead, sacrificed animals and gave offerings to their gods. “Such Egyptians as possess a temple of the Theban Jove, or live in the Thebaic canton, offer no sheep in sacrifice, but only goats; for the Egyptians do not all worship the same gods, excepting Isis and Osiris, the latter of whom they say is the Grecian Bacchus.” (Document 7) This shows that the Egyptians made sacrifices to various gods, in order to please said gods. They believed that if the gods became angered, they would take their rage out on the people of Egypt. Even pharaohs were not above giving to the gods of their religion. Like Egypt, the Greek gods exist to represent different aspects of life, but they also play an active social role in the people’s lives. In Greek mythology, the gods have feelings and flaws as the normal people do. Greek Gods have even had children and committed adultery with people. The Egyptian gods interact more with each other than with the people. They interact with the people more on a supernatural level. Hebrew religion, being monotheistic, had only one all-powerful god. Instead of being believed by the people to be somewhere in the world, the Hebrew god was completely separated from the physical universe. Abraham in Canaan (about 1800 BC) is the first known practicer of monotheism. As for monotheistic resemblance in other cultures, the Greek god Zeus is seen as a leader of the other gods, but not independent of them. Akhenaton’s short-lived reform of Egyptian religion reveres Aton as the source of all life. This is the earliest religious expression of a belief in a sole god of the universe. Akhenaton’s challenge to the power of the priests did not last beyond his own lifetime.

Something I noticed after viewing several pieces of ancient Egyptian art is that a great deal of it is religious.
