In almost every high school throughout the United States, there always seems to be some discontent between the members of the football and soccer teams. One is considered to be the most popular sport in the United States, while the other is deemed to be the most popular sport in the world. The former, football, has more participants at the high school and college level than any other sport in the United States. While the latter, soccer, is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Although these two sports have some significant differences, they also have more similarities than some people may realize. A football field is one hundred and twenty yards long and fifty three feet wide. It is divided into one hundred yards of the playing field and two ten yard long end zones on each side of the field. In football, there are twenty-two players on the field at a time with eleven of those players coming from each team. It is played with a football that is made of leather and rubber and is filled with air. The players are separated into two different roles, offense and defense. The offensive players’ role is to score touchdowns while the defensive players’ role is to prevent the offense from scoring touchdowns. A touchdown is awarded when the offensive team moves the ball across a solid line at the end of the field before the end zone. After a touchdown is scored the offensive team is afforded the opportunity of gaining an extra point by kicking a football through a field goal post in the end zone. If the offense is unable to gain ten yards after four attempts, then it is a turnover and the ball is given to the other team, but usually a team will kick the ball away if unsuccessful in three downs. The only protective gear soccer players wear are shin guards. Football players, on the other hand, wear a helmet and shoulder pads to protect themselves while getting tackled. The two sports may have their differences but at the same time there are many similarities. They are both physically demanding and require a great amount of work and dedication to succeed on the professional level. Football and soccer players should be able to respect each other and not be constantly arguing over which is the better sport. Everyone will always have their own opinion and fighting over it does not benefit anyone. Football and soccer are a couple of the most athletically grueling sports around, and they help people stay in shape while teaching them the concept of teamwork.
