Should the HKSAR Government take the lead to encourage the usage of electric car in Hong Kong? Recently, the uses of electric cars in Hong Kong are widely discussed. This issue has alerted a lot of environmentalists, car drivers and citizens in Hong Kong. Electric Cars can benefit society by lowering the exhaust gas emitted by cars and making the air cleaner. The cost of using electric car is lower than driving the ordinary cars using gasoline or diesel fuel. Therefore, the Hong Kong government should, with its assumed responsibility, to take the lead to encourage the use of electric cars in Hong Kong. We know that ordinary vehicles release a large amount of black smoke when they are operating. Such black smoke contains many gases that …show more content…
It is mainly owing to the high initial cost of the cars, as well as the lack of promotion of using electric cars. Insufficient existing charging station also contributes to this. To alter the current situation, the government should play an important role to pioneer the use of electric cars, so as to change the mind of citizens on using electric cars. Most Hong Kong citizens will follow the trend if more and more electric cars are seen on …show more content…
To show the determination of Hong Kong government of switching into using electric cars, I think that more electric car charging stations should be built by the government to make charging of electric cars easier. Though Hong Kong is small, there is still a large piece of vacant land in urban and rural areas. For example, we can see a large piece of land in Kai Tak is still abandoned, and some Some may be used currently for car-parking. This precious land can surely serve something more meaningful. A large scale of electric car charging stations can be built on such land to serve as the ‘test point’ of this project. Then the government can build more electric car charging stations in other parts of Hong Kong. Besides, the government could build mini electric car charging stations in government buildings. When the the coverage of electric car charging station is wide enough, private corporations will take over to save the running cost of the government. I believe that this greener transportation will be accepted by most Hong Kong
The 1996 documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? explores the factors behind the demise of General Motors’ EV1, the popular and elusive electric car of the early 1990’s. The EVI was popular with the public, and it was clean, fast and efficient. This video sets out to solve what is effectively a murder mystery – the plug was pulled on the EV1 in 2002 after only 1,000 of these cars had been produced by GM, most of which were subsequently destroyed by the company in a secret location in the Arizona desert.
The Automotive, or electric car industry particularly, comprises all those companies and activities involved in the manufacture of electric motor vehicles (EV), including most components, such as engines, bodies and rechargeable batteries or another energy storage device. The industry’s principal products are passenger automobiles. Despite the fact that the first electric cars were produced in 1880s , the advances in internal combustion engines, especially the electric starter, soon diminished the relative advantages of the electric car and became the dominant design in the market. Due to this the EV was almost a forgotten industry staying in the early stage of development, conforming to less than 1% of the automotive stock
Buying a car is usually going to be the first big purchase a person will make in their life. It is actually considered the second biggest purchase, right behind buying a house. Cars now can do things like park themselves and even drive themselves. Electric cars are also a thing that is getting a lot of attention and studies show that they will be what dominate our streets and highways in the near future. Many people turn to electric cars because they are very efficient to our pockets. Not spending money on gas for the rest of your life is a huge selling point for many people. The problem is that recharging your car takes so long that sometimes it is not even worth it. Electric cars are also very good for our environment. Electric
When the Tesla Model S was first released, Consumer Reports named the Electric Vehicle (EV) the most remarkable auto ever tested. The consumer protection publication; that has been looking out for their readers since 1936; said that the Flagship vehicle from Elon Musk’s Motor Company, was essentially flawless. Its performance on the track and in safety testing was second to none. However, due to a drop in quality class; from average to below; the Tesla Model S has been removed from Consumer Reports’ Recommended List.
...rther then the end of 2010, the introduction of the electric car is not far to come. With proper government regulations and consumer knowledge, adoptability of the electric car is possible. However, one can drastically differ in opinion as to why the required elements to support such a vehicle were not readily planned to facilitate such a change. The inadequacies draw wavering concerns for both consumers and business looking for the return of value and profit. The larger picture needs to be remembered in which oil is not a renewable resource and results in pollution and environmental hazard. Consumers and business must work together to overcome the roadblocks down the road and support each other in the introduction of and future of the electric car. Adjustments will have to be made on both sides to ensure success and minimize the society and economy disruptions.
Financial status are very crucial for the community, we prosper with financial success, and we suffer during economic downturns, and that’s where electric cars come into play. Electric cars will help to stimulate the economy substantially when it attacks the market by encouraging more spending to increase the money flow. During 2011, it costed a little more to drive an electric car than a gasoline car, however, with better battery technology now, and easier charging access, the cost for consumers have soon decreased. On average now days, it cost about 7.8 cents to drive one mile on electricity, and 15.9 cents on gasoline. Thus is technically cheaper to fuel the car with electricity than gasoline, and that’s why we should make these resources more readily available to the public. Electric cars sales are also expected to increase to 7% by the
Depends on Where You Plug In”, Paul Stenquist (2012) illustrates that electric cars can release greenhouse gases or can not because it depends on how the electricity that is used to recharge the cars was generated from. According to Stenquist (2012) if the electric cars are recharged by the electricity that is generated from renewable energy like nuclear and solar power, the cars would have zero for carbon footprint. Also the electricity that is generated from natural gas that would produce carbon less than coal. Carbon footprint is the total amount of gas carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases, that the cars release or spend. The author also gives an example to show how charging electric cars at Denver and California are different in amount of carbon footprints. Reports from EPA and U.C.S. are used by Stenquist (2012) to support that the carbon footprints that the cars made are different depend on the sources of electricity that recharge the cars. However, the chief excusive of Nissan at that time declared that it does not matter what is the electricity that recharge the cars generated from, electric cars are still better in the way that can reduce emission than the best of gasoline car model can
Thesis Statement: The need to move away from oil dependency has sparked an interest in electric powered vehicles and as they become more affordable for the average person, they look to be like a great alternative.
Portfolio Project: Tesla Motors Case Study Tesla Motors (Tesla), founded in 2003 by Elon Musk, is an automotive company focused on enhancing Electric Vehicle market by creating optimum performance, all electric, vehicles for every class of consumer (Tesla Motors, 2015). In order to achieve such ambitious goals, Tesla Motors not only designs, but also manufactures, and personally sells the company’s electric vehicles (Hirsch, 2015). As additional quality assurance, Tesla Motors also designs, manufactures, and sells, electric vehicle power-train components, and battery products (Hirsch, 2015). Yet, despite the pivotal role Tesla’s self curated products play in the success of Tesla’s vehicles, the socially responsible company does not privatize Apart from Musk’s concise vision statement Tesla has a truly inspiring mission statement, “At the core, Tesla Motors believes that electric cars should not be perceived as a sacrificial mode of transportation. Tesla Motors has brought the best of both the automotive and technological worlds together by permanently etching the image of electric cars being a step backwards in performance, efficiency, and design” (Tesla Motors, Chiefly, and most apparently, it is the goal of Tesla Motor to generate demand for Tesla vehicles (Andrade, Holloway, Payne, Roy & Sheffield, 2015).
The substantial increase in the demand for EV’s came just in time as we are slowly but surely running out of oil. Some estimate that by the year 2040, 35 percent of all vehicles will be electric (Sullins, 2017). An article from the U.S. Department of Energy stated that “Electric vehicles hold a lot of potential for helping the U.S. create a more sustainable future. If the U.S. transitioned all the light-duty vehicles to hybrids or plug-in electric vehicles, we could reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 30-60 percent, while lowering the carbon pollution from the transportation sector by as much as 20 percent (energy.gov, 2014). It’s obvious that gas-powered vehicles have harmed our planet with their emissions. Although EV’s cannot reverse that damage that has been done, they can eliminate, or at least slow down, the inevitable demise that our planet is headed towards. Along with the beneficial environmental factors that correspond with electric cars, there are also beneficial financial factors. The average American spends about $2,000 on gas annually. In the future, charging stations will charge roughly $12.00 for a full charge, which is about 300 miles. This means that the average American will save about $1,400 per year on these specific car
Global climate change is becoming an ever more relevant topic, and the reality of the issue is becoming more apparent. Support is growing to combat the effects, and one of the assumed ways is by driving eco-friendly vehicles such as the Toyota Prius or other hybrid cars. However, after researching some questions arise of just how eco-friendly these products are. One will explore the environmental effects of hybrid and all-electric vehicles. There are also economic impacts and social factors that will be addressed and they directly affect the production and consumption of these vehicles.
In this case study I will be discussing advantages and disadvantages of electric cars. Electric cars are cars that are powered by electricity. Electric vehicles are an important part of cutting emissions and reducing global warming. The battery of an electric car stores electrical energy. The electric motor is coupled to the wheels through gears; it converts 59-60% of electrical energy into the wheels. The battery runs the motor which allows the car to move. Electric cars are necessary as they will save money, because electricity is cheaper than gas. Also electric vehicles will help reduce global warming and pollution. However, some people say that electric cars still have environmental costs. The electricity used to recharge EV batteries has to come from somewhere in the world, and now, most electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels. Although electric vehicles are classified as green cars, purists will not appreciate the toxicity of the batteries.
having a private electric cars is no longer a dream. But do all people know the good things and
Most people today fill up their car with different qualities of petrol, because that's what the average car takes. They don't usually consider an alternative for the petrol that they load into their cars. Although petrol is widely used, it is not the only source for a car to get its power from; diesel and electricity are alternatives to the general petrol used by most cars. Although different from each other, diesel and electricity are alternatives to the average gasoline received at a gas station. Diesel is a more concentrated type of fuel that is usually used by big automobiles because they require a lot of power in a little amount of time. Electricity is a method that uses the power of batteries to produce a low horsepower but, nevertheless fast automobile. Electric cars are generally created to be soundless and environment friendly. The purpose of this paper is to classify and educate the reader of the different types of fuel available for an automobile to use: petrol, diesel, and electricity. The general petrol, used by most people, is usually the only type of fuel accepted on the average car in the United States today.
There is no doubt that electric cars are the most appealing from of transportation in the world. They provide two of the most important key points of good transportation: reliable and efficient. They are reliable due to their simplicity of their power trains and the advancement of technology they have. They are efficient because they don't use any gasoline and because their motors can pass the zero-emission standard. Even though they may seem like a boring form of transportation, they offer good features that help keep the Earth's air clean and they help reduce pollution.
