Is Social Media Ruining Society? In today's world, technology is a prominent source of entertainment for many users of all ages. While roaming in a public setting, it is almost impossible not to see at least one person with their head down buried in their cellular device checking their newsfeed on their Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, or any other social media platform to see what's new in the surrounding world. Social media can be a great way to keep up with friends, family, and the latest news and trends, but could it potentially be harmful to our society as a whole? Many people, specifically younger generations, believe that social media has been the best way to cure human boredom. What could possibly be better than curling up in bed and watching Netflix movies all day? Being out in public alone doesn't have to be a boring task anymore when you have a phone attached to your hip at all times. Eating alone? Check Facebook. Having trouble picking out an outfit? FaceTime your friends in the dressing room. Lounging around in the waiting room at the doctor's office for half an hour? I have noticed that anytime I am around a group of young girls who are "hanging out," they all happen to be on their phones checking social media platforms and getting in touch with their other friends who happen to not be there. The problem I find with social media is that it has sucked in some specific users so much that they feel obligated to keep up with their apps at all times to make sure they do not miss anything happening around them. This can be okay when you really are bored and have nothing to do and genuinely are curious as to what is happening with family or friends that may not live close by, but to be on your phone constantly when you are surrounded by those you chose to spend the day with?
