Definition of leadership Leadership is a performance of an individual to develop a clear vision of the ideal future and by working with others can make the vision happen (Yoder-Wise, 2015). Leadership is important in many different occupations and in general all concepts in life. Leaders help society develop by accomplishing one vision after another. Many people believe that they are a leader by just having a formal position, but that is not the case. Leaders will act as role models to inspire their followers. Besides, the leader will challenge the followers to take a greater ownership of their work. Transformational leaders normally understand follower’s strength and weakness so that the leader will not affect their performance when allocating task for them. Nevertheless, transformational leadership can inspire or motivate followers to achieve a better result compared to originally planned (Mihhailova, 2014).
Giltinane (2013) identifies three leadership styles. The first is transactional leadership in which a leader is controlling and functions in a reward and punishment environment. In transactional leadership style, leaders give little room for employees to express ingenuity. Decisions are passed laterally from top down and the form of leadership is to stress obedience rather than loyalty. Transactional leadership is closely related to autocratic style (Giltinane, 2013).
Leadership is the ability that someone has to motivate, guide and empower a group of people, in the particular case the personnel of an organization, in order to achieve specific goals.
A transformational leader is one who encourages intrinsic reward amongst individuals (Nielsen, 2013, p.128). Grossman and Valiga (2013) comment on the power of transformational leadership and state: “this motivation energizes people to perform beyond expectations by creating a sense of ownership in reaching the vision” (p. 73). In order to move forward and to minimize horizontal violence, nursing leaders must work towards creating a safe and fair work environment (Nielsen, 2013, p. 133). However, it is not only nurse managers who are required to take action, but every nurse must hold themselves responsible to assume leadership at work (Grossman & Valiga, 2013, p. 71).
According to Business Dictionary.com, leadership is defined as the individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively. It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.

Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
There are also some pros and cons of transformational leadership. Some of the pros are that it is a theory that is researched extensively. It is a theory of leadership that the general public can understand; you don’t have to be an I &O Psychologist or a human resource director to understand the principle of the theory. Some of the cons associated with transformational theory are that it can be difficult to measure the parameters. The four factors discussed earlier overlap in some regards and it can be hard to distinguish them from one another. Some think of the theory as a trait and not a behavior. If an organization is well established and set in their ways, meaning not a lot of change in the organization; then transformational theory may not work very well.
In summary, transformational leaders through their behaviors of compassion and selflessness encourage followers to emulate them. Through persuasive communication and confidence building, leaders advocate the adoption of new values and endorse the goals of organizational to their followers. Accepting of change, they focus upon coaching, communication, and mentoring to promote organizational success. Leaders challenge the process by encouraging others to challenge themselves to a higher performance. They create an open environment in which followers can create and innovate to meet the increasing challenges of tomorrow.
