Several things have come about because of disciples thinking and talking about their faith. First are Creeds. A creed is a concise yet specific statement of Christian belief, originating from the Latin word credo, which means “I believe.” An example is the Nicene Creed which was first written in 325 AD in Nicea, and later revised in 381 at Constantinople. Second are Confessions, which are formal statements of the beliefs of a specific group of Christians. The Augsburg Confession, written in 1530, is an excellent example. It was written by the Protestants under Martin Luther who were against Roman Catholicism. Next there are Doctrines, positions widely held by the church such as the doctrine of virgin birth. Finally there are Dogmas. These
