Nursing informatics is continuously evolving field that began when computers were introduced into the healthcare field. Informatics practices support nurses as they seek to care for their patients efficiently and safely, by making the information that they need more readily available (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015). Information technology and informatics is being incorporated into nursing school curriculum also the country, but the progression is slow. Staggers, Gassert, and Curran advocate that nursing students should be educated on nursing informatics competencies. Beginning nurses can implement nursing informatic skills and competencies into daily practice by being able to start the computer and successfully access and select applications needed to ensure optimal patient care. This is important for documentation purposes, medication administration and information about the patient to ensure quality care. Using data from the software about the patient is important, but in order for a beginning nurse to interpret the data correctly, they must be able to have the basic knowledge of the healthcare organization 's software. A nurse can collect data and chart it into the software so other healthcare professionals involved in the patient 's care can easily obtain accurate and legible information. Informatic practices support nurses, benefit nurses, and increase patient centered care. It allows information to be readily available to healthcare professions involved in the patient’s care. Every time I enter the clinical setting I am amazed with the advancement of technology and how accessible the information is. Beginning nurses should be able to start the computer, access the organization’s software, access email, and collect and enter patient data into the information system. Nurses need a solid understanding of computers and basic knowledge of the healthcare organizations software. An informatics priority would be to improve clinical information systems throughout health care settings and to increase the nurse’s comfort level with computers.
