PERFORMANCE: Issue: Through conducting an evaluation of herself, she identified ways she could improve her leadership skills. In order to become a better Charge Nurse, she recognized she needed to enhance her leadership skills. She also saw the opportunity to help others develop in their own nursing practice. Action: She has taken courses, such as “Leading at the Speed of Trust,” and studied books, such as Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High by Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, Switzler, and Roppe, to increase her leadership capabilities. While performing her duties as the Charge Nurse, she has learned to inform the staff of her reasoning when making certain decisions. After receiving feedback from the staff, she now incorporates this skill to promote teamwork and avoid conflict. Staff members describe her as being a supportive and knowledgeable Charge Nurse that has effective communication skills, gives clear explanations and instructions, and always sets good examples in providing high quality patient care that meets patient and family needs and concerns. The students she mentored and precepted have all passed their board examinations and received their Registered Nurse licensure and have been hired at Duke University Hospital, UNC Hospital, REX Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, and Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center in intensive care units, emergency departments, and medical-surgical units. As a preceptor for nursing students, she provides feedback to their clinical instructor.
