Bullying is a problem that ruins the lives of thousands of American children all over the country. Bullies are responsible for multiple mental health issues and social problems that teens face today. Furthermore, it affects the livelihood and stress among teens all over the country. Bullied children are more likely to suffer from depression and in some cases lead to suicide. Bullying is a problem which effects the victim’s mental health, substance abuse, and suicide.
Bully’s effects a person’s mental health by massive amounts of stress and overwhelming situation. “At least one in four children has been the victim of bullying.” (Workplace Bullying Institute, “Mental Health Harm from Workplace Bullying” 2) The bully’s focused on their assailant to take apart their victim 's character, ego, and ability to recover from the assaults. The severe damage to one’s psychological health could lead some teens to alcohol and drugs abuse. As a result, teens use substance abuse as a way to cope with the psychological stress cause by bullying. Over time, substance abuse could lead to a life of alcoholism, drug addictions, and even death. “Being bullied at school increases the odds that a teen will abuse alcohol. Students grades 7 through 12 were 1.5 times more likely to abuse alcohol if they had been bullied.” (Promises Addiction Treatment, “Bullied Teens Seek Comfort in Alcohol, Drugs” 2) Therefore, when teens are bullied they try alcohol and drugs as a way to mask and deal with their emotional problems. When a bully victim feels bullied, they think and feel powerless to stop it. For that reason, bullies socially separate their victims during a time when they are socializing with their friends and peers is specifically significant.
