Introduction
To become an effective SME or IDE, one must have a very good understanding of the various ways in which individuals interact and communicate with each other. It is critical that good leaders display the ability to effectively communicate with their acquaintances and subordinates, as well as train and encourage others to demonstrate those same communication skills. By effectively doing so, they will promote both a healthy and efficient work environment that everyone will benefit from. The perspectives of effective communication require that team members meet the challenge of learning together to effectively communicate and implement these skills in attempts to achieve a common goal. Innovation is the main driving force that determines the majority of successful corporations. A company that continues to build a culture of innovation will always be on the offensive and enjoy continuous growth. Innovation can generally be regarded as innovations regarding process and innovations concerning manufactured goods. Companies can create a culture of innovation by allowing its brightest like minded employees a platform to be heard, expressing and sharing new ideas in a community setting can bring about change, As Tom Peters describes in the Article “Change is about recruiting allies and working each other up to have the nerve to try the next experiment”.(Heywood, 2015) Innovation can only take place when a company encourages and respects its employee’s ideas. Bill Aulet’s point of view implies the need for individuals along with advances in science headed by entrepreneurship. The common denominator in terms of creating a culture of innovation is the overall growth and benefits for the company. Without innovation company’s can be left behind by competitors and consumers
Based on interviews with management, we found that XTO’s management style encourages innovation. Employees are encouraged to ask for forgiveness and not permission. We’ve learned this semester through lecture and readings, that this management technique empowers employees and gives them the autonomy they like and the freedom to create. Employees that work under this type of management style are not faced with the possibility of loosing their jobs if they make a business decision that turns out to have negative consequences. Employees are free to innovate and take pragmatic risks. The company culture at XTO is described as laid back and relaxed. XTO believes that major oil and gas companies are unable to implement this type of culture due to their size. Since XTO is smaller, the company is able to deploy a much different policy from what the majors employ. As the company rapidly grows, this relaxed practice has become a concern for XTO’s management. The company has recently grown so much that they’ve had to pull back slightly on the relaxed atmosphere. Management has been working with Human Resources to increase the amount of structure within the company. It remains to be seen if this policy will stifle company innovation.

It is important to consider that communication is not just verbal in form. One study suggests that the majority of communication is more affected by body language, attitude, and tone, than based on the actual words said (O’Daniel, 2008). Interprofessional communication is one of the main cornerstones of effective and sustainable collaboration. It involves observable exchanges of information and knowledge that include subtle and sometimes overt demonstrations of attitudes, personal values and behaviours (Morison, 2007; Suter et al., 2009; Gordon et al., 2011; Campbell, 2014). Individuals need to listen to each other and collaborate in order to develop mutual knowledge, which enhances communication. It is important that staff on the units take time to assess innovators and brain storm areas in which they can empower and motivate the others to follow. The culture and environment of units must be that of being willing to be open to change and new ideas so they can be assessed during initial meetings.

On a daily basis, leaders are expected to communication on both a business and professional level. As stated by Solaja, Idowu, and James (2016) “today’s leaders must acquire effective communication skills for public speaking, listening and critical thinking in order to promotes organizational performance and cordial relationship between the organization and the external public” (p. 100). The new ideas that come along can be a turning point for the whole organization. If there is one good idea it could set the company apart from the competition drastically.
