The movie Day After Tomorrow which is directed by Roland Emmerich is about how the earth’s climate change can lead to natural disasters such as massive superstorms, tsunamis, floods and earthquakes which could wipe the human population from the planet. How does this relate to the world we live today? The answer to this question would be global warming, also known as the greenhouse effect. Global warming has changed the climate of this planet vastly in the last 20 years. The movie is an example of what the world would look like if the climate of this planet kept on changing due to global warming and the greenhouse effect. What is Global warming? Global warming also known as the greenhouse effect occurs when too much carbon dioxide gets omitted …show more content…
One enormous problem caused by it is the melting of ice worldwide especially at the earth’s poles. As a result of the melting of the ice, the sea levels have risen by a huge percentage resulting in coastal flooding worldwide. The salinity of the oceans has decreased due to all the fresh water added by melting ice. Many creatures that depended on certain types of habitat have gone extinct. For a example, polar bears who live in the icy regions are losing their habitat and many are destroyed due the melting of large regions of ice in the polar regions. In many regions of the world the weather patterns have vastly changed, causing strong hurricanes and storms that are destructive. Most of these storms and hurricanes are caused due to the temperature rise in the sea. This also kills corals reefs. One other major problem with Global Warming is water scarcity. Many regions such as California that had many areas covered with water are now regions with just deserts. Lack of water causes tree to die resulting in soil erosion (Economist). California is not the only region affected by this, countries such as Africa, Somalia and Sudan are also affected resulting in many deaths of animals and humans living in those particular regions (NASA). Not having enough water also causes in food shortages due to dying of plants and animals. This is the main reason why many deaths are caused in the countries mentioned above. In many
In its place we are entering a period of consequences." According to the facts that were mentioned by Al Gore in the film, I believe we are already living in the period of consequences. He said “carbon dioxide have never gone above 300 PPM,” but according to NOAA most recent global monthly mean of CO2 in September 2015 was 397.08 PPM. Due to such climate change, most recently the world has experienced most severe natural disasters, even in places where normally such disasters are not expected and abnormal. Also, in the last quarter century 30 new diseases were emerged even deadly like Ebola. “We don 't have that luxury anymore. We didn 't ask for it, but here it is” (Al Gore). We don’t neither do animals. A scientific study shows that polar bears are drowning in the Arctic Ocean and that has never happened before. Due to swimming long distances, up to 60 miles, and without finding the ice that they depend on for resting, they
Global warming is a scientific, political, and controversial topic. Some believe it is catastrophic, a slow moving killer hiding in the shadows. Others do not even think twice about it as they race by in a Hummer. Global warming is the gradual increase of temperature throughout different climates. It is caused by the greenhouse gas effect in which greenhouse gases, like methane and carbon dioxide, reflect sunlight back and forth. This reflected ultraviolet light bounces between the earth and the ozone layer and becomes trapped, resulting in a gradual rise of temperature. Over time, the slow rise of temperature causes new climates throughout the globe. The article “What Megablazes Tell Us About the Fiery Future of Climate Change” by Tim Dickinson
The theory that Earth is headed for a new ice age has been a topic of discussion in the scientific community, but was not discussed by the public until the release of the movie The Day After Tomorrow, and since its release in 2006, it has been viewed by more than 30 million adults. The movie has some base of scientific facts with a dash of creative liberty added by the screenwriters. The National Science Foundation funded a study, performed by Anthony Leiserowitz of Decision Research, to explore the movies impact on public opinion in regards to climate change. The study conducted two nationwide surveys, one a week before, and one four weeks after the movie’s release. The resul...
When the sun heats the Earth gases are released as well as water vapor. They go into the atmosphere and regulate the temperature. This is known as global warming or the greenhouse effect. Many of the environmental complications derive from the political and social involvement. The climate was not the only cause, but we had humans played a role on what had been occurring to the world. Earth has many different atmospheric layers that are influenced by the greenhouse gases. “Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide have now increased nearly 30 percent since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution; methane levels have more than doubled; and nitrous oxide concentrations have risen by about 15 percent” (Fagan 209). The increase of these gases also enhanced the trapping of the heat. With more heat being trapped this lead to many coastlines to flood due to the melting of snow and ice. The increase of dangerous weather actions will pose as a threat also. These changes in the environment would eventually lead to political and social change of the people Overpopulation in certain areas and industry formation influence the greenhouse effect. We as a whole are destroying the place we live, the natural world. Although there are ways to prevent and reduce global warming, we cannot stop the natural occurrence of future climate. Climate is not the only factor, each individual that as
Due to climate changes, we are a “gradual and uncertain rather than immediate and obvious” process, we as humans cannot understand it (Jamieson, 102). In addition, climate change effects have no geographical bounds and because very few people pay attention to events that occur beyond national boundaries, most people are oblivious to its existence. Jamieson makes the point that climate change must be thought rather than sensed, and we as humans are not very good at thinking (Jamieson, 103). On top of that, even if we succeed in thinking that something is a threat, we are less reactive than if we sense that it is a threat. Since we cannot even comprehend climate change's presence in our world right now, it also makes it extremely difficult for us to comprehend how our anthropogenic actions of today will affect future generations all over the world.
In “The Day After Tomorrow” a climatologist’s warning of the possibility of massive cataclysmic climate changes caused by global warming go unheeded. His predictions of the consequences of such actions just so happen to occur sooner than anyone had ever expected. This movie served as the ultimate example what could happen if as a world community we do not clean up our acts. Continued consumption of nonrenewable resources, increased carbon dioxide emissions and further depletion of the Ozone layer could though most likely not on the scale illustrated occur in one form or another. The moral of this film is summed up by Dennis Quaid’s character in the last scene when he mutters his last few lines stating that hopefully humani...
Al Gore also notices that the ten hottest years on record have occurred in the last 14 years. He gives many examples such as the massive heat wave in Europe, the dramatic high temperature in India and a lot of cities in America. The temperature increases are occupied in the whole world, not only the land but also the oceans. When the oceans get warmer, that causes stronger storms. In the last couple years, there are a lot of big hurricanes. These catastrophic disasters did a lot of damages. They lead to more flooding, heavy rain. However, they also lead to more drought. The spring comes earlier and the fall comes later, the temperature keeps on going up. Many explorers found that the ice is less thick than before. Mr. Al Gore uses a lot of scientific and geographic knowledge to explain the cause and the consequence about the global warming. Ecological environment has been influenced and many rare animals are endangered. Many mosquitos change their habitats and expand their range owning to the change of temperature. Also, it causes a lot of vectors for infectious diseases. It is often said that human should save water and water is a necessary. However, most people never notice that many droughts were caused by global warming. The explanation in the movie is very convince and persuasive. When I was a senior high school student, our geography teacher told us global warming not only makes the temperature high, but also makes many potential dangers. As I was a child, there is a catastrophic disease named SARS, my mother told me that the disease was very serious and led a lot of people to die. If we have to go out, we should be well-armed. We need to use masks to keep us from the virus. From this case, SARS is a disaster and from this movie, global warming is also a
Damage to human health, severe stress on forests, wetlands, and other natural habitats, and how fish will be affected. Global warming is a serious problem that will affect our generation when we are older. In talking about global warming, we need to learn what causes the greenhouse effect. Rays from the sun are taken up and absorbed by water vapor that is naturally in the atmosphere. The United States emits the largest man-made greenhouse gases in the world.
Global Warming is a condition caused by greenhouse gases and human activities. The increased concentration of greenhouse gases due to activities such as deforestation and fossil fuel burning is causing the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans to warm up. As a result of this, global warming has some serious effects in the shape of extreme weather, species extinctions, and rising sea levels. These effects can contribute to the changes that are taking place all over the world, most of which are dangerous enough to pose a threat to the survival of life on Earth in the future.
Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and its oceans, a change that is believed to be permanently changing the Earth's climate. While it changes the Earth’s climate it takes away different species that we depend on and some which other species depend on and also effect (in a bad way) the environment in which we live and can cause permanent damages to humans, animals, plant which will change the whole chain of ecosystem.
Global warming is the gradual rise in temperature and oceans due to recent human activity. This is created by the production of too much carbon dioxide that is released into the earth’s atmosphere. The carbon dioxide, also known as a greenhouse gas, remains in the air trapping heat and gradually warming the planet. Other greenhouse gases such as: methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor also contribute to this slow warming. According to Live Science, The state of these gases being trapped is called the greenhouse effect, which is one of the leading causes of global warming (Lallanillia). All the gases are created differently and have different effects on the earth. As for some greenhouse gases can be in the atmosphere for a short amount of time, other gases can remain in the atmosphere for thousands of
The movie The Day After Tomorrow is about a paleoclimatologist’s, a person who studies past climates, concerns of how a shift in the world’s climate could cause catastrophic disasters to happen throughout the world. The way that The Day After Tomorrow perceives scientists is that they are determined and they often times have to make difficult decisions. In the movie the character Jack Hall, the paleoclimatologist, displays these two characteristics.
The movie, The Day After Tomorrow, addresses the issue of global warming. The movie?s portrayal of the events caused by global warming was extreme and not very believable. Some of the information is backed up by science but most is completely off the wall and nonrealistic.
Global warming is a serious problem with two major effects: increasing sea level and degradation of wildlife. Increase in sea level affects the entire landmass of the earth. According to NASA, the polar ice cap is melting at the alarming rate of nine percent per decade. Arctic ice thickness has decreased 40 percent since the 1960s (Oskin). The amount of water is more than the land on our planet.
... of extreme weather and melting ice caps are indicators of global warming. Because these things will affect society, there are important decisions that have to be made in the present as well as in the future to secure people’s lives and lifestyles. The world community is aware of this serious issue and do already prepare for projects to slow down global warming, but they still have to improve. If the world leaders stop worrying about this issue, the future generations could be in danger. The future lifestyles will be affected by the decisions made in the present day. Society has much to improve to save energy and to lower greenhouse gas emissions. There are also small things people can do to help. Individuals can live a life without wasting energy or polluting the environment. Without effort, global warming endangers the quality of life for the future generations.
