Amazon is one of the world’s largest online retailers and is known to be the titan of e-commerce. As a go-to site for shoppers of all ages, as of 2017, it ranks number 83 on Forbes’ Global 2000 list of the world’s biggest and most influential companies. (Forbes, 2017) Targeting everyday online shoppers to merchants alike, in this technology based era, this company has grown exponentially over the years and altered the way people shop. Compared to the industry growth percentage of 15% over the past five years, Amazon has grown nearly double that amount by 28.3%. (Zacks, 2017) According to Needham & Co, a Wall Street firm, Amazon accounts for 34% of online U.S. sales and by 2021, its market share is estimated to grow to about 50% (Fortune, 2017). Just in 2016, Amazon generated 135.99 billion U.S. dollars, nearly 29 billion dollars more than the net revenue of 2015. (Nasdaq, 2017) As of July 2017, this multinational corporation hit $500 billion in market value and is steadily increasing that amount through new innovation, expansions and acquisitions. As demonstrated with Seattle, Amazon estimated that its investments in this city throughout the years of 2010 to 2016 have added an extra $38 billion to the economy. It claims that for every dollar Amazon invested in Seattle, an additional 1.4 dollars for the economy was generated.
