Today I focused on developing myself professionally by attending a workshop on 10 ways to be an effective advocate in Norfolk, Virginia. The workshop provided advocacy tips, the organization of state government, and highlighted legislative committees, the bill process, and how a bill becomes a law. We also discussed Virginia’s state budget and we were given several resources that will aid us in advancing our research and expanding our knowledge base on advocacy. I am especially interested in this process because I want to practice on a macro level, so I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. Although the advocacy workshop was geared toward preventing child abuse in Virginia, I feel this information can be applied to any population we serve. As a
Nursing advocacy is a professional obligation and the standard of practice expected by the Ontario College of Nurses (CNO, 2009). The concept of advocacy is enshrined into the code of professional ethics that nurses “must promote the interests of clients in their care” (CNO 2009). To meet this standard the nurse must first ensure a deep understanding of advocacy and how it relates to the nursing profession. Advocacy in nursing is a concept that can be first seen in the early work of nursing theorist Florence Nightingale and her plight to protect the safety of patients through autonomous nursing actions (Goldie, 1987). Although the concept of advocacy had been presented in early nursing theory, the term “advocacy” had not been
My definition of social justice in the field of education is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child and the British-Colombia School Act that state that every child has a right to a proper education (UNICEF, n.d.; School Act, RSBC 1996, c. 412). A proper education to me is based on opportunity. I believe that in order to have a proper education, children should all be entitled to equal opportunity in their learning process. Children should have equal opportunity to obtain the supports that will assist them in achieving their potential.
This paper is about a reflection on a class interview for a senior social worker. The teacher gave every student ten minutes for this interview. The students did not have an idea of what their situation was about until couple minutes before the interview. This paper will focus on the limits of confidentiality for the client, potential assessment for the client, engagement with the client, and evaluation of the social worker.
I argue that Iris Marion Young’s ideas about responsibility for justice, applied to questions about child welfare, can be used to devise a system that provides for children who are abused and neglected. Foster children in America are rarely talked about by politicians, despite relying on government programs for their survival. Because they are children, they don’t have the resources to create organizations and lobby politicians for better aid. This means that we all have a responsibility to do these things for them and change the current system that is failing them, whether we are directly in contact with the child welfare system or not.
A state that undertakes custody of a child is declaring that it can do a better job providing protection. This system is a powerful agent of support, providing positive nurturing environments that enable a child to reach his or her potential. Nonetheless, when children suffer additional abuse in the system, this government intervention should be questioned.
Sociology is something I didn’t know about until I took this class. This class introduced sociology to me. I learned about how society basically made boys supposed to like blue and girls supposed to like pink. Sociology is “the systematic or scientific study of human society and social behavior, from large-scale institutions and mass culture to small groups and individual interactions” (Ferris and stein 2014: p9). Sociology is not something you just learn when you are just born. You learn about sociology throughout your life. Sociology is displayed around things such as being around different environments, friends, and family. Education is a sociology idea that can examine a person’s class and schooling. The higher the education you have,
Client based advocacy is an important backbone to the relationship the nurse has with the client. In a 2017 survey by GALLUP nurses were found to have the highest expected honesty and ethics standards (GALLUP, 2017). Clients trust the nurses to be their advocates for the best possible care while in a vulnerable and often frightening time. In the healthcare setting the nurse acts as a bridge for the client to appropriate information and other practitioners in the healthcare system. Nurses are in the position to advocate for the various client rights and the rights of their family (CNO, 2015). In Tilda Shalof’s book A Nurse’s Story, the stories of working in an intensive care unit apply well to multiple examples of nurses acting as advocates
Around the 1950’s and 60’s, the Civil Rights and Anti-war movements began to lay the ground work for the feminist movement. During the 1970’s, spousal abuse became a public issue and the battered women’s movement was brought to the public eye. At this time there were several movements under way such as, women’s liberation, women’s health, and anti-rape movements. As a results of the success of these agencies and the resources and networking that already was in place, many battered women’s shelters were opened across the United States. The first of these, was the Women’s Advocates shelter in St. Paul, Minnesota which opened in 1973. It was not until 1984 that a bill, The Family Violence Prevention Services Act was passed through Congress. This act would allow the Secretary of Health and Human Service to give grants to States that would assist them in creating, expanding, and maintaining programs and projects that aid in the prevention of family violence.
My concentration for human services is children and family so I took this journal topic very seriously. I was already knowledgable with this topic, but I had never been asked to put them in order from most influential to least. I thought this was going to be really easy but I struggled with deciding which was more influential. I thought the biggest problem for at risk children would be parent criticism, anger, and blaming. Growing up kids look up to their parents and if someone they look up to is making them have low self-esteem that is going to cause major problems later on in life. The second I felt was the next biggest problem was children feeling shame. I feel like these last two go hand and hand with each other. The next was parental imbalance, if
Advocating is part of social work, successful advocacy depends on a network of individuals who educate themselves on the issues and contact their elected government officials. However, the key point of it all has to be committed. We must strive for the well-being of people despise the feeling that we might feel because of the role of government and policy. We must commit on the way we make a stand for what we believe in.
In some instances, case managers may fall short when it comes to effectively meeting the needs of a potential client or patient. There may be a number of reasons why the tactics implemented by the case manager were deemed ineffective. Regardless of any futile attempts that may be made on behalf of a client in the future, a key element that can reduce such ineffectiveness lies in the process of client patient advocacy. Advocacy is a method that contributes to the awareness of something in any field for any reason. To advocate for something, means to support or fight for a particular stance or cause. For a case manager, advocacy for them would be to support or bring awareness to their patients predicament and or conditions in an effort to better
This week I asked my field instructor what skills, knowledge, and values are most needed by social work students in my practicum setting? My supervisor responded, “ You should have a high compassion level for people along with a mutual respect for them, a wider range of community services that are available in the area, and be well versed and rounded in crisis intervention theory along with cultural diversity. Everything that my field supervisor suggested coincides with the generalist competencies described in table 3.1, there is nothing that contrasts with this table. I agree with my supervisor one hundred percent if I do not have at least a basic knowledge and at least some compassion and respect then social work number one would not be the
The key aspects discussed in this paper will center around human trafficking and the need for nursing advocacy. Chapter 87, which is entitled “Human Trafficking: The Need for Nursing Advocacy” gives insight and defines the meaning of human trafficking but also lends the role of the nurse in the fight against such a heinous crime. Human trafficking is defined “as a serious crime of forced labor” (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw & O’Grady, 2016, p. 680). Unbeknownst to many, human trafficking is not restricted to just women, this crime can involve young children and also does not discriminate gender or ethnicity (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw & O’Grady, 2016).
I created the story of trying to pack for a trip. When a person has to find the things they need, make sure the suitcase fits and just overall feeling ready. I got the idea when I realized my sister and mom are leaving for school trip to New York, because she is a part of the Drill Team. When I started to help them get ready I thought I could do it for my final project. I tried new angles and tried to show the struggle everyone knows goes through when getting ready to leave their home for a trip. I decided to make this a short documentary film. It is a short film but also shows my point of view of packing that is why I chose documentary.
Feedback offers focus beyond the grade received and coupled with the skill of reflection, action to praise ourselves and continue performing our strengths whilst improving our weaknesses, is granted (Schon, 1991). Utilising Gibb’s (1998) reflective model, this assignment produces critical reflection on feedback from my presentation and other sources.
