Advancements in technology allow communication to be more efficient and more reliable. Websites have been designed that are based on social interaction and businesses are getting involved online to connect with their consumers through this Internet site. These websites are called, social media, and it offers a way for consumers to network by sharing content that is accessed online. An article from the California Management Review defines social media as, “the way in which people interact to create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks” (Katona, 2014). The majority of the social media websites that are used remain free to public. These websites exist open to anyone with Internet access, and any person can create a profile and post information for no charge. This tactic happens to be particularly beneficial for businesses because it allows the markets to obtain free advertising and marketing. Traditional marketing campaigns are exceptionally pricy and companies typically use 5 to 7 percent of their sales to use for advertising and marketing (Joyner, 2014). That could cost up to millions of dollars just for the expense of promoting the product. Social media websites allow business to use their websites free. It has been recorded that as of 2014, Facebook has over 30 million businesses with actives pages on the social network (Ha, 2014). Social media marketing can be helpful company that is struggling with money because instead of spending costly amount of promoting the company they can now focus further on the product. This allows easy access to Internet allowing abundant amounts of people to be constantly on a form social media. This assists social media marketers because the markets put out the information allowing the consumer to do the rest of the work. In her article, Regnier, says that, “people spend more than a quarter of their time involved in online communication activities, which is equivalent to the total time spent online for general leisure and entertainment” (2014). Consumers view and share posts that business post and allow their friends to see it creating a chain of people who see the post. With the invention of hashtag a consumer can use it to connect with other people. Recently Coke-a-Cola innovated the coke can and told the consumers to use the hashtag “shareacoke”(Esterl). With this hashtag there were more than “5000,000 pictures posed” (Esterl). This was such a good and unique form of social media marketing because it allowed the consumer to promote the product while feeling personal with the product. When friends saw their friends’ post pictures of the can, it made the friend became the new consumer because they wanted to go out and buy a can of Coke like their friend did and go post on social media to show even more friends. The connection and chain of marketing through friends by social media is a unique way and advancement of social media
