When I first started college, my view of a health care professional was a transparent overview of the field and their duties. I knew what they did, but at that time I didn’t understand why. Becoming a health educator is easier said than done, and with the knowledge comes a great responsibility. Health education as defined by the World Health Organization is “the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health’. That is noteworthy, yet at the same time, a very board definition. I define health educators as a guardian of the unmindful, meaning as a health educator, you are responsible for the knowledge of your community and expanding their mind set.
In my journey through my undergrad years, I have realized that becoming a health administrator will allow me to address several of my interests while also allowing me to serve my community. I will be able to expand my thirst for knowledge while also making a self-efficiency community. I feel as a health care administrator, I need to encompass the role of a lifelong learner. For this to be continuing achieved, I need to be critically reflective of my environment and the people in the community.
A health administrator is a profession that requires flexibility and having an open-mind when it comes to constructing your obligations to the community. It is extremely important to me that I learn to cater to the large range of personalities and abilities that will exist in my future community. I define health as a term that means being happy with your body while at the same time eating right and exercising. I would personally accomplish this goal by reading health education journals, previewing new products, and being aware of what can affect my community both positively and negatively.
I will look forward to becoming a healthcare administrator, and being part of a larger community. As healthcare educators, we are offered a chance to improve the quality of many peoples ' lives including family and friends. We are the faces of the community, with the common goal of building a healthy community. I want to be able to say I made a difference in someone’s life rather big or small. Being a healthcare administrator will be a lifelong career that I look forward to doing in the future.
I work in this field trying to understand more and more the underlying problems and not superficial situations. My role a few years ago as Manager in Nursing was to seek to overcome the conflicts generated in patient care or the administration of resources and to be able to lead a group of people with different points of view over the same issue. My position must be a policymaker. My commitment is to be a creator and driver of sustainable health policies and not only idealised ideas or projects.
We are so easy to think that being a health provider is just about diagnosing illnesses and diseases that we miss the actual picture. We are caught up in misconceptions and led to think incorrectly about health practitioners. Being a health professional is a selfless effort into trying to help people in ways that run much deeper than just prescribing medication. My commitment to the health care profession is to provide excellent care for my patients. I will work to help manage patients with their illnesses, prevent disease, and promote a health lifestyle. We are health care educators and advocates for patients, families and communities. There is a mix of flexibility, opportunity and job security offered by nursing not currently found in any other profession, which allows me to rotate among different employment settings. I choose this profession to help the ones in need and improve the quality of life for others. There are so many areas of nursing out there, but all these areas overlap and the more I learn and absorb, the better nurse leader I will become.
I incorporate Erickson’s Modeling and Role-Modeling Theory in my daily nursing practice. The most recent advances in health care would not be possible without nurses, who strive to make continual improvements and advancements in health care. By successfully completing my journey of becoming a nurse practitioner, I am working toward better opportunities and advancements in health care. I plan to use the advancements and new developments that I learn during my nurse practitioner journey to give back to my community.
I have had the opportunity to work alongside a diverse and extensive number of doctors and nurse practitioners, among other health professionals, which has exposed me to different ways of practicing, different work ethics, skills, and abilities. I know what patients typically consider to be desirable and undesirable traits of health professionals.
I hope to impact this professional with my knowledge and expertise. I am now in school again to further my knowledge of this profession. It may seem old for some. However, for me learning has no age and boundaries as I continued to gain more knowledge and perhaps someday I can be a mentor for my peers. I hope to someday work In Risk management where I can continue to fight and argue the rights of my patients and peers whom all deserve a sense of dignity and self-worth. My contribution to this profession includes providing and promoting care with a holistic approach that is inclusive of the mind, body, spiritual belief practices because the patients I see as being more than just another patient in need of my care. The patients are like you and I and perhaps wants the same as I want for them. I’m sure with my great sense of enthusiasm that I may accomplish something here because my day will never end until I make an unmistakable stamp on a profession I always wanted to practice since that little girl whose heart was touched by the many caring professionals that provided care to my mom. Ultimately, I hope to join the faculty of an academic medical center, where I can combine patient care with my love of teaching, and where I can continue to explore how interactive technologies can inform and empower patients. Most of all, however, I look forward to taking care of my patients, drawing on the remarkable depth and breadth of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“A public health nurse is a nurse who works to promote and protect the health of an entire population” (Allender, Rector, & Warner, 2010, p. 839) the public health nurse I chose to interview was Barbara, she currently works for the Health department and has been there for three years. During the interview Barbara discussed the requirements for a public health nurse. The individual must have the ability to exercise independent judgment, planning and able to administer safe effective public nursing care. In addition be able to work effectively with individuals and families to assist them in the satisfactory solution of health problems, by recognizing and respecting of different cultural, ethnic and difference on health care practices. The nurse is also required to know disease prevention such as, different techniques on teaching, counseling, interviewing and resources available. Barbara stated that the most important part of being a public health nurse is being able to care. Barbara acknowledged that there are numerous individuals that she assists everyday that just want someone to exhibit that they care and understand. The education a public health nurse should obtain is a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which Barbara posses. “Public health nurses working with specific populations or in administration position should hold a master’s degree” ( Allender et al., 2010, p.839). Barbara discussed that before becoming a public health nurse she worked at St. Francis Hospital as med-surge nurse for five years, after that it was imperative that she change working environment. Barbara confirmed that working as a nurse in the hospital was extremely diverse then working as public health nurse. “Comparing public health nurse and general nurse, public health nursing is population based, focuses on the greater good, health promotion and disease prevention, and utilizes community resources. The general nursing is individual based, focuses on individual good, restoration of health and function, and manage resources at hand” (Minnesota Department of Health, 2007). In the beginning Barbara thought that public health nursing would be a difficult job to gain knowledge of however, she established that it was exceptionally effortless and gratifying career to posses. Barbara stated that she did not realize how much assistance was out there for the public until; she worked as public health nurse. Barbara spends 95% of her day going from place to place by doing home visits, investigating different cases, assisting with screening programs and enormous amount of paper work.
Healthcare Administration is an occupation where one would plan, direct, or coordinate medical and health services. These tasks take place in hospitals, clinics, managed care organizations, public health agencies, or similar organizations. This occupation works more with documents, with little patient interaction. You do not commonly become certified to draw blood, and one does not require an internship for this career. This occupation does require a background check. Many careers require specific types of certification. Healthcare Administration requires an LNHA (Licensed Nursing Home Administrator). Challenges for this field depend upon the workplace in which one is working.
Healthcare administration provides leadership and managemnt to health care systems, hospitals, and private or public health systems. There are requirements for most professions in the health industry but with the proper education and certification, most entry-level careers are attainable. Healthcare administrators are leaders so one must be able to handle the responsibility of the job. There are characteristics that can be associated with being a health care administrator. I have learned over the course of the past few weeks that this the career path that I would like to follow and have set a few goals to help promote my career growth. I have chosen Public Health as my career path because I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. Also, I chose healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness. Moreover, Public Health is a challenging, diverse and dynamic field. What makes a person healthy? Surely, it is more than exercising and a proper diet. As a ten year-old girl, being healthy had one meaning to me; to eat all my vegetables and to be physically fit. I have chosen healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness.
Professional Goals I would like to pursue a career in healthcare administration, which is my ultimate goal. From there, I would like to work in a hospital setting where I can be of assistance to a larger population. Another goal I would like to achieve is earning a master’s degree in healthcare administration. While a bachelor's degree is needed for entry-level positions, a master’s degree can help me advance in my career and provide opportunities to work in certain areas that require this particular degree. Additionally, I would like to improve my communication skills, as it is an essential aspect of healthcare administration.
