The word strength brings many thoughts to mind such as: power, muscle, durable, advantage and potency to name a few. All of these words give a positive connotation to strength because strength is, generally, speaking a very useful tool. Before taking the strength finder test I would most likely associate the word strength with physical capabilities. However, through this Strength Finder course I have found a new and much more empowering perspective of this word strength. My strengths according to this assessment are: Futuristic, Belief, Communication, Activator and WOO. Academics have always been an area I excelled in. I enjoy learning applying myself and being surrounded by people who are also eager to learn. Being Futuristic I tend to keep on my assignments and stay motivated. Alternatively, I tend to hyper focus on exams or big assignments. Learning to planning my schedule more intentionally would help not only manage my time but put myself at ease for heavier weighted grades. With my natural gift as an activator I have an easy motivation to accomplish this task keeping in mind activators tend to fade out and are typically weak finishers accountability should prevent this. One reason I find academics important pertains to my faith. I believe my God is a God of excellence therefore I too shall strive for excellence in all things including academics. Belief makes this perspective very real to me and instills this in my being. Even though academics are related to self intellect academics also can be effected through relationships. WOO has perks when it comes to engaging with professors, very few teachers have found me unappealing. Intentionality with professors goes along assisting with grades. Being a WOO in class can be a struggle if you do not focus on work and are too sociable, teachers will have a harder time liking you if you are distracting. In middle school I struggled with this more than I do now. Lastly communication in academics is important, from written and verbal reports to group assignments, being an effective communicator helps relay everything you have learned into something others can utilize as
Before taking the StrengthsFinder® assessment I didn’t know what type of leader I was, but I felt I had leadership traits that I could not describe. After answering several questions from the Clifton StrengthsFinder® 2.0, I found out my top five strengths. These strengths consist of individualization, arranger, learner, input and responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to go over my top five strengths to talk about which four domains of leadership these strengths fall under, how class material is applied, and the actions to best utilize my strengths.
In the lecture presentation by Dr Homes (Homes) he discussed how the strength-finder is a tool that he uses in his operations to help and identify strengths that both compliment and fill missing gaps. These assessments help identify compatibility. Compatibility includes your co-workers, superiors, subordinates and other in the work place but also in your personal life. He discussed the need to understand the strength of others so that we can relate to them better. And by relating better, we are able to manage, motivate and lead them better. He clearly articulated the value of the strength finder assessment for better leadership.
This strength, in particular, influenced my decision to pursue social work as a career because cases will often be complex and I know that changes do not occur overnight and positive results only occur within time. I mastered the strength of being patient because growing up with an older sibling often requires you to learn patience. One aspect I realized was I don’t get frustrated easily and that is because I can be a patient person. The second strength I possess is being empathetic for example when a friend or family member shares something that may not be going to good in their life I like to pretend I am in their shoes, I like to provide empowerment and also be relatable, often times when one of my friends is upset over a situation I tend to get upset as well. I like to look at events through a sociological lens so I can better understand the situation. The last strength I possess is dedication, I feel this will influence my decision to pursue social work because I put my heart and soul into every aspect of my life, for example, I am quite dedicated to my studies, in High School I worked extremely hard to make it into the top ten of my graduating class and by being dedicated to my school work I ended up being number five. I tend to agree with this assessment as it brings out my best qualities as strengths in the right way and enables me to assess myself to realize my potential. The strength that can best describe me is the balance which also means consistency. This has helped me cultivate my reputation and has helped me balance my choices. The one that surprised me is courage since at most times I am a team player, and this rarely enables me to stand out
My five greatest strengths according to the StrengthsFinder survey are activator, restorative, achiever, command and relator, in rank order. Upon reading about these strengths, I can see how I have used and will continue to use them. I was aware of these strengths, for the most part, but while researching I was able to learn a few things. One article that stood out to me was “Don't let your strengths become your weaknesses” (Kaiser, & Kaplan, 2013). In this article, the possibility of strengths becoming weaknesses when overused was discussed. The authors explained how overdoing can be just as purposeless as under doing. The ability to read and respond adeptly is crucial in handling challenges, they explained. As with everything else in life, balance is key!
Strength is an abstract concept with various meanings. Some meanings are more complex than others. Many people when they hear the word strength think of muscular men who can lift cars or comic book heroes that fly around their city saving people. More exists to the concept than just being muscular. Strength is also shown when one goes through something tough but stays positive and pushes through it anyways. Having strength can mean possessing the ability to accomplish hard tasks because of muscles, being firm or solidly planted in something, or withstanding your own and not giving up or giving in to the opposing force.
Identifying and understanding your own personal strengths is key to being a successful leader. Knowing your strengths means you can focus your efforts to maximize results, in yourself and in others. Strengths Finder 2.0 is designed to uncover your strengths and utilize these strengths to your advantage (Rath, 2007). Identifying and applying these strengths to your leadership style, will enhance your effectiveness as a transformational leader.
These strengths have allows for me to flourish in school and the activities I participate in. Along side these strengths are my weaknesses that have allowed me to encounter some learning opportunities. Ive gained knowledge from these weaknesses. Every day I remember a phrase my mother tells me, “Academics come first.” I have taken this advice to heart by not only putting them first, but also by choosing to pursue an extremely rigorous academic program. Entering high school was a very drastic change for me, I knew that I chose very rigorous courses by participating in the pre-IB program. However, I was able to adapt to the workload very well. I quickly learned time-management skills that I had not needed in middle school. Due to my excellent time-management skills, I am able to participate in extracurricular activities that I enjoy being a part of while being able to handle the demands of my challenging academic schedule. Another key to my success is my organizational skills. Having these two strong aspects together, I always turn my assignments in on time, and I am very well prepared for tests and quizzes. One strength I saw myself, as having when I enter college is being able to understand and critical think about a essay/article that I have read. However, after taking English 101, I have now learned that this is a strength of mine as well as a weakness.
Academics has always been an important part of my life. Ever since I was a young child my parents have pushed me to lead good life academically. All throughout grade school I have had decent grades (generally speaking in the nineties or above), and I owe this, at least partly, to my parent's determination to give me the best possible education. I also owe this to my will to be at the top of my academic game. This was naturally quite easy for me up until my senior year of high school. When my senior year came around, there was a lot of pressure on me to make a lot of life changing decisions. When all of this was put on me, the last thing that i wanted to do was change the way i was living. I loved the way my life was, and going away from home to college wasn't something that i felt i was ready to do. Because of this i decided to enroll in Genesee Community College, which is about five minutes away from my house.
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. As Roth states in Strengths Finder 2.0, we as a present day world tend to focus on and try to overcome our weaknesses rather that building up our strengths. Using our natural talents can help us do the best we can and help us be a better asset. After taking the strengths assessment, I found that my top five strengths themes ended up being: relator, discipline, competition, responsibility, and significance.
After completing the Clifton strength finders test, I learned my dominant strengths and it gave me a sense on what areas I am strong in. It allows you to work in the areas that you are good in and not in the ones you might not be as strong in. My top five strengths were learner, connectedness, belief, positivity, and includer. A lot of these I figured I would have because I am an athlete and I love to be positive. That is good because I practice these strengths every day which in turn will make me better at them and will allow me to use them in my career.
Strength is a term with many definitions. What does strength mean? Anyone can sit down and start to write down their strengths but, how many different types of strengths are there? There are personal strengths, mental strengths, and spiritual strengths that all have a positive effect on people’s lives. Throughout life, strength is what helps overcome the problems we face. Strength is defined by Dictionary.com as “a good or beneficial quality or attribute of a person or thing.” No matter what kind of strength different people in society have; strength is something gained through personal experiences and life. During my first weeks of college I was given the task of taking a quiz that helps me determines my strengths that will help succeed in my college career and beyond. The online quiz assesses you talents and strengths with which you can develop by reading the book ,Strengths Quest, which explains your abilities. The quiz takes thirty minutes to ask about various topics that determine your top five strengths or “themes of talent”. When I first read the synapsis on the back of the book I was skeptical about the accuracy of the quiz’s ability to determine what I’m like based on one hundred and thirty questions. Once I finished the test I still questioned the truth behind the results, until I read the book. I believe that Strengths Quest is a helpful tool that will help me through my college career. The test determined that my personal talents were: adaptability, learner, input, relator, and intellection. Each attribute is presented in the order of the strongest to the weakest. I feel as though the strengths are accurate because I see the similarities between them and my personality.
